Hockey Adds R.J. Harris as Director of Hockey Operations

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU hockey team and head coach Dave Shyiak have hired R.J. Harris to fulfil the role of Director of Hockey Operations.

"I'm honored to join such an incredible program and beautiful community," adds Harris, who joins NMU from the Iowa Heartlanders of the ECHL. "I'm excited to make the jump into college and help develop our young future stars."

Harris was named Equipment Manager & Assistant Director of Hockey Operations for the Heartlanders, proud affiliate of the NHL's Minnesota Wild and the AHL's Iowa Wild, in July 2025. The Heartlanders were Harris' first foray into pro hockey, as he joined the Heartlanders after two seasons with the USHL Tri-City Storm from 2023-25.

Prior to that, the Elmer, NJ native worked as a supervisor at Pure Hockey. Harris is a graduate of the Rowan College of New Jersey and played two seasons of junior hockey in the MNJHL with the Hudson Crusaders. 

The Wildcats open the 50th season at home with its banner raising ceremony to honor Don Waddell, Tom Laidlaw, and Steve Bozek on Friday, October 2, at 7:07 PM.
