Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan women's basketball team extended its win streak to four games with a 73-57 victory over Lake Superior State Thursday night at the Berry Events Center.
The Wildcats opened the game by running out to an early 8-2 lead after a Bre Gaspervich layup and free throw. Later in the quarter, Darby Youngstrom stole the ball and ran the floor, finding Gaspervich in transition for the layup to make the score 10-6 with 5:12 to play in the quarter. After one, the Wildcats held a 19-10 advantage.
Northern Michigan continued its fast start with a 7-0 run to open the second quarter, highlighted by back-to-back triples from Sydney Dillinger and Youngstrom, to grow its lead to 16, at 26-10, with 8:17 to play in the half. After both teams traded baskets, Taylor Hodell connected with Gaspervich for a triple from well behind the arc to grow the lead to 19, at 33-14, with 4:37 on the clock. The Wildcats took a 40-19 lead into the locker room at the half.
A Tess Weatherly layup ran the score to 51-21, the Wildcats' largest lead, at the 6:44 mark of the third quarter. Lake Superior State battled back, cutting the lead to 25, 53-28, after a Tamara Novic layup. On the following possession, Dillinger answered for the Wildcats, collecting an offensive rebound and putting the layup off the glass to make the score 55-28 with 3:53 to play in the quarter. The Wildcats headed into the final quarter leading the Lakers, 60-34.
Following a Hodell jump shot, the Wildcats built their lead up to 28, at 67-39, with 6:29 to play. Lake Superior State continued to battle back, cutting the lead to 14, 71-57, with 1:11 to play.
Northern Michigan out-rebounded Lake Superior State, 39-14, and outscored the Lakers in the paint, 34-14.
Hodell posted a career-high 18 points and team-best five assists. Youngstrom netted 14 points while Gaspervich rounded out the top three Wildcats with 13 points.
Northern Michigan moved to 13-13 (12-8 GLIAC) on the season. The Wildcats return to the floor Saturday, taking on Northwood at 11 a.m. with a GLIAC tournament berth on the line.
