Box Score HILLSDALE, Mich. — A Tess Weatherly layup with six seconds left in regulation propelled the Northern Michigan women's basketball team to a 58-57 come-from-behind win over Hillsdale Saturday afternoon at Dawn Tibbetts Potter Arena.
With the win, Northern Michigan moves to 12-13 (11-8 GLIAC) on the season. The Wildcats are 4-1 in the month of February.
Northern Michigan headed into the final quarter of play trailing the Chargers, 46-39. Bre Gaspervich knocked down a triple to open the quarter and cut the deficit to four, at 46-42, with 9:49 to play. Hillsdale quickly answered with a triple to go up by seven.
Later in the quarter, Northern Michigan trailed by nine, at 55-46, with 3:49 to play. Northern Michigan then went on a 10-0 run to steal the lead, at 56-55, following a Gaspervich triple with 1:19 to play.
Sarah Thuet answered with a layup to regain the lead for the Chargers, at 57-56, with seven seconds to play. Coming out of a timeout, Darby Youngstrom found Weatherly in the paint for the game-winning layup with six seconds left.
Both teams found themselves deadlocked at five with 6:05 to play in the first quarter. The Chargers then used an 11-0 run to take a 16-5 edge with 3:07 to play in the quarter. On the final play of the quarter, Youngstrom beat the clock on a layup, cutting the deficit to 19-12.
Gaspervich was able to drive the lane and connect for a layup to cut the deficit to five, at 21-16, at the 8:00 mark of the second quarter. The Chargers quickly grew their lead up to 11 following a Makena Ott triple with 6:09 to play. At the half, the Wildcats headed to locker room down 31-21.
The Wildcats chipped the deficit down to five, at 35-30, with 5:16 to play in the third quarter after Gaspervich hit another triple. Hillsdale then went on to grow a 10-point, 45-35, advantage by the 2:23 mark. Northern Michigan trailed after three quarters of play, 46-39.
Gaspervich posted a game-high 26 points and added four steals and five rebounds. The junior has netted at least 20 points in three-straight games and in four of the past five. Youngstrom netted 17 points.
The Wildcats will return to the Berry Events Center Feb. 18 to take on Lake Superior State at 6 p.m.
