Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan men's basketball team held off Ohio Dominican, 75-71, Sunday afternoon at the Berry Events Center.
Terry Nash made four-straight free throws to close out the game for the Wildcats, who move to 4-6 (2-4 GLIAC) with the win. Isaiah Johnson, who made his first career start, posted his first double-double with 13 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.
Northern Michigan opened the game on an 8-0 run, not allowing the Panthers to get on the board until the 16:23 mark. By 12:33, the Wildcats led, 20-3, bolstered by two Jordan Perez three-point shots.
Northern Michigan continued to pour it on and, by 3:38 of the first half, held its largest lead of the game, at 34-11. But Ohio Dominican began to chip away at the Wildcat advantage and went into halftime only down, 34-22, after scoring the half's last 11 points, seven of which were netted by Ronnie Williams.
In the second half, Northern Michigan grew a 16-point lead by 15:14, with the score at 47-31. From that point on, though, Ohio Dominican began to work its way back into the game; at 8:54, the momentum began to swing in the Panthers' favor after Williams hit one of his five three-point shots to draw his team within six, at 56-50. He then made two free throws after being fouled while hauling in a defensive rebound to pull Ohio Dominican within only four.
That was as close as the Panthers would come. From that point on, every time they managed to draw within four, the Wildcats responded with a basket of their own to stay in the lead. A highlight of the game's final three minutes was an emphatic Marcus Hall three-point shot that helped put the game just out of reach for Ohio Dominican.
Williams finished with a game-high 29 points. Four Wildcat starters scored in the double digits: Perez (17), Hall (15), Johnson (13) and Nash (10).
Northern Michigan returns to action Thursday when it faces Ashland in Ashland, Ohio at 7:30 p.m.
