Box Score 2 MARQUETTE, Mich. — After playing a pair of five-set matches Saturday, the Northern Michigan volleyball team finished the Wildcat Open with a 3-1 record.
"I'm very proud of our players and their comeback win against Fort Hays," head coach Dominic Yoder. "It really showed a lot of character, especially in the environment we had to play in."
The Wildcats rallied from a two-set deficit to dispatch Fort Hays State, 3-2, in their second game of the day. After winning the third set in commanding fashion, 25-14, Northern Michigan earned a hard-fought 25-21 victory in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set.
In that set, the Wildcats posted a .444 hitting percentage and limited the Tigers to a .167 percentage in a 15-8 victory.
Kayla Chosa led all players with 21 kills while Lisa Studnicka also reached the double digits with 10. Alex Berger posted 19 digs to lead all players while Jami Hogeboom posted a Northern Michigan-best 27 assists.
Overall, the Wildcats recorded a .221 hitting percentage and limited the Tigers to a .148 percentage.
In the early game, the Wildcats fell to Upper Iowa, 3-2. The teams traded sets, with Northern Michigan winning the first (25-15) and third (26-24) sets and Upper Iowa taking the second (25-21) and fourth (25-12). In the decisive fifth set, the Peacocks edged the Wildcats, 15-12.
Studnicka led all players with 19 kills while Chosa was right behind with 14. Berger led all players with 28 digs while Hogeboom recorded a team-high 27 assists. Lynzi Svoboda also reached the double digits in assists with 19.
The Wildcats finished with a .120 hitting percentage, while the Peacocks posted a .105 percentage.
Michigan Tech, which posted a 4-0 record, won the tournament, which was hosted by the Wildcats Thursday through Saturday at Vandament Arena. Northern Michigan finished tied for second with Upper Iowa.
"Hat's off to Michigan Tech for winning the tournament," Yoder said. "Coach Matt [Jennings] and his team are doing great work, and I wish of them the best of luck when we go to Iowa next week."
The Wildcats return to the court Friday when they travel to Fayette, Iowa for a tournament hosted by Upper Iowa.
