Colla Records Double-Double In Regular Season Finale Loss To Michigan Tech

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team had three players score in double-figures led by a double-double from senior guard Alyssa Colla but were unable to top No. 9 Michigan Tech in their final home game of the season as the Huskies picked up a 63-50 win over NMU Thursday at the Berry Events Center.

Colla scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior guard Lauren Gruber and senior forward Abbey DeBruin added 10 each.

The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Wildcats as NMU fell to 17-9 overall with a 15-7 GLAIC record. Tech improved to 24-2 with a 20-2 league mark and will enter the GLIAC tournament as the top seed.

NMU will enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will travel to face No. 4 seed Grand Valley State Wednesday. Tipoff against the Lakers is set for 7 p.m.

The Wildcats fell behind early and were unable to take the lead but managed to tie the game three times trailing 28-20 at the break.

NMU shot 30-percent from the floor in the first half connecting on 8-26 from the floor while MTU managed to connect on 13-27 from the floor for 48.1%. Colla led the Wildcats with eight points and eight rebounds at the break.

Tech came out in the second half and connected on their first few shots to stretch the lead to double-figures. Back-to-back layups from DeBruin and Gruber cut the lead back to single digits at 35-26 with 15:37 left to play.

Michigan Tech took their largest lead of the game 52-35 with 6:12 left to go but the Wildcats went on an 8-2 run over the next few minutes highlighted by a pair of three's from sophomore guard Bre Gaspervich and Colla to cut the MTU lead to 54-43.

NMU finished the game shooting 38.2% (21-55) from the floor and 30% (3-10) from the three point line. Gruber finished the game with three rebounds which pushed her over 500 for her career. With that mark, Gruber became just he 12th player in school history to record 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds.

NMU out rebounded MTU 36-25 and outscored the Huskies 32-24 in the paint.
