Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Northern Michigan University sophomore guard Bre Gaspervich and senior guard Lauren Gruber led the Wildcats women's basketball team scoring 21 and 20 points, respectively, as NMU rolled to a 79-51 win over Hillsdale in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday at the Berry Events Center.
The win pushes NMU to 15-8 overall and 13-6 in GLIAC play while the Chargers moved to 15-8 with a 11-8 league record.
"I thought defensively we were really good today and we had very few breakdowns and made it hard for them to get easy looks," said NMU head coach Troy Mattson. "I thought we also took care of the basketball and that is our biggest thing, if we have 10 assists or 10 turnovers that is big for us."
Gaspervich led all players with 21, shooting 5-8 from the floor, 1-3 from three-point range and connecting on 10-12 from the charity stripe. Gruber's 20 came from 4-6 shooting from the field, 1-2 from three-point range and 11-15 from the charity stripe.
Senior guard Alyssa Colla added 12 rounding out the double-digit scorers for the Wildcats.
Senior forward Abbey DeBruin along with Gaspervich and Gruber led the Wildcats with seven rebounds each. NMU outrebounded Hillsdale 44-38 and outscored them 32-16 in the paint.
NMU led for 34:16 of the game after trading shots with Hillsdale through the first 11:30 of action. A three-pointer from senior center Courtney Lemon with 7:31 left in the first half gave NMU a 14-13 lead, which they never relinquished.
The Wildcats outscored Hillsdale 17-6 the rest of the half to take a 31-19 lead at halftime.
NMU connected on 10-30 (.333) of their attempts in the first half and were 5-14 (.357) from three-point range. They held Hillsdale to 8-28 (.286) from the floor and 2-5 (.400) from three.
Northern Michigan opened the second half with an 8-2 run and held a double-digit lead the rest of the way.
A layup from sophomore guard Ashley Colla with 1:28 left in the game gave NMU its largest lead of the game 79-49.
NMU went 14-29 (.483) in the second half and were 1-5 from three-point range. The Wildcats also connected on 19-25 from the free throw line in the second half.
Kadie Lowery was the only Hillsdale player to break double-figures with 12.
NMU returns to action at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Lake Superior State.
