Box Score DETROIT — Taylor Hodell posted her second-straight double-double, but it was not enough as the Northern Michigan women's basketball team fell to Wayne State, 61-58, Thursday night.
The Wildcats and Warriors found themselves tied at seven at the 5:26 mark of the opening quarter. Northern Michigan came out of a media timeout firing on offense when Emily Schramek knocked down a three-point shot at with 4:25 on the clock, starting a five-point run and opening a 12-7 lead. The Warriors tied the game 16 seconds into the second quarter at 12, but Bre Gaspervich responded with a three-pointer to give the Wildcats a 15-12 lead at the 9:18 mark.
Once again, Wayne State was quick to answer, tying the game at 15 after an Ashley Wilson jump shot. The Wildcats found themselves trailing, 29-25, at the 1:22 mark. A Hodell layup cut the lead to two, 29-27, with 14 seconds on the clock. Northern Michigan ultimately headed into the half trailing, 32-27.
The Wildcats battled their way back in the third quarter. They began an 11-point run that stole the lead away from the Warriors, which was highlighted by pair of Tess Weatherly three-point shots that tied the game at 36 all and then gave the Wildcats a 39-36 lead with 4:49 remaining. Northern Michigan held a 48-43 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Wayne State cut down the Northern Michigan lead and tied it up at 52 with 3:56 remaining. The Warriors then grew a seven-point lead, at 59-52, with 1:48 remaining. A Gaspervich layup cut the lead to two, 60-58, with 12 seconds remaining.
Hodell posted a double-double for the second-straight game with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Gaspervich netted a game-high 16 points.
Northern Michigan moves to 2-5 (1-2 GLIAC) with the loss. The Wildcats will return to the court Saturday when they travel to Findlay for a game at 1 p.m.
