Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University (12-6, 10-4 GLIAC) outscored Northwood 36-19 in the second half en route to a 63-50 victory in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic play. The Wildcats shot 22-45 (.489) from the field in the contest, while holding Northwood to 17-59 (.288) shooting. Senior center Courtney Lemon recorded her second double-double on the season with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Northwood came out of the gates fast scoring the first seven points of the game to give them the early lead with 16:32 remaining in the half. The Wildcats were able to cut the deficit down to as low as two but were unable to take the lead before the half. A pair of free throws from senior guard Alyssa Colla set the halftime score at 31-27.
Northwood was able to score 11 points off of nine NMU turnovers in the half and outscored Northern Michigan 12-2 in second chance points off of eight offensive rebounds. Lemon led all scorers at the half with 12 points as NMU shot 10-19 (.526) from the field.
The Wildcats opened the second half taking their first lead of the game at 40-33 with 13:48 in the game after the Wildcats went on an 11-0 run capped off with a three-pointer from sophomore guard Bre Gaspervich. Northern Michigan extended their lead to double digits at 47-37 before the Timberwolves used a 7-0 run to bring the game to a tight 47-44 and 8:25 on the clock.
The game remained close until the Wildcats finished strong with a 10-1 run in the final three minutes of the contest to pull away for the 63-50 victory. A three-point basket from senior forward Abbey DeBruin sealed the victory.
Northern Michigan would outscore Northwood 28-10 in the paint in the game, 18-8 in the second half. The Wildcats continued their hot shooting going 12-26 (.462) in the second half, while holding Northwood to 7-29 (.241) including 1-11 from beyond the arc (.091).
Colla chipped in double-figures with 12 points to follow the Lemon double-double.
Northern Michigan next travels to rival Michigan Tech Monday, February 2nd for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off. The game will be featured live on WLUC TV-6.
