Box Score ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Northern Michigan University hockey Wildcats picked up a 1-0 win over the Alaska-Anchorage Seawolves behind a first period goal by freshman Robbie Payne and a shutout by sophomore goalie Mathias Dahlstrom. The Wildcats are now 7-1-1 on the season, 4-1-0 in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, while the Seawolves fall to 4-7-2 overall, 1-6-0 in the WCHA.
Dahlstrom finished the game with 13 saves in his fourth shutout of the season. "Mathias made the saves he needed to make and our team played well in front of him," said head coach Walt Kyle. "Mathias' play continues to show that he is a tremendous goaltender."
In the first period the Wildcats outshot Anchorage 11-4. Robbie Payne scored at the 19:39 mark on a 2-on-1 break with senior defenseman Jake Baker. Baker had the lone assist on the goal, which went on to be the only goal in the game.
The Wildcats continued to dominate play in the second period. The 'Cats outshot Anchorage, 8-2, in the second period. Play in the third period was even as the Wildcats had 6 shots on goal, compared to Anchorage's 7.
Special teams did not result in any goals on the night as the Wildcats killed all six Seawolve power plays, allowing only 2 shots. The Wildcats were 0-4 on the Wildcat power play, landing 6 shots.
The Wildcats and Seawolves will face-off in the second game of their two-game series on Saturday, November 23 in Anchorage. The Wildcats will then stay in Alaska to play Alaska-Fairbanks on Friday and Saturday, November 28-29.
