NMU Men's Basketball Rolls To Second-Straight Win

Box Score

MARQUETTE, Mich – The Northern Michigan University men's basketball team picked up its second-straight win as the Wildcats rolled past Ohio Dominican 75-52 at the Berry Events Center Saturday.

The win pushed NMU to 3-8 on the season and 2-4 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference action. The Panthers fell to 3-7 on the season with a 1-5 GLIAC mark.

"We came out in that game and played really flat in the first 10 minutes, nothing went right. A month and a half ago if we would have come out like that we would have lost that game," said NMU head coach Bill Sall. "But in the final 10 minutes of the first half they just scratched and clawed and did everything they could. It wasn't very pretty but they did everything they could when you didn't start very well to win. And in the second half we didn't let up. We came out and probably played the best half of basketball we have played all year."

Junior forward Justin Newell led NMU with 16 points while junior forward Chavis Mattison came off the bench to record a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Marcus Hall added 13 points for NMU.

The Wildcats outrebounded ODU 41-27 and outscored the Panthers in the paint 26-20. NMU shot 46.8-percent from the floor connecting on 29-62 attempts and shot 47.1-percent from three-point range connecting on 8-17.

NMU held a double-digit lead through the second half and took its largest lead of the game with 4:27 left in the contest when sophomore forward Brandon Havercamp got a put-back.

After trailing by as many as nine, NMU used a 16-0 run to close out the first half and take a 31-20 lead into the locker room at the break. A three-pointer by junior guard Larry Taylor capped the run for the Wildcats. Mattison led NMU with 10 first half points.

The Wildcats dominated the boards in the first half outrebounding Ohio Dominican 26-13 including an 11-1 margin in offensive rebounds. Havercamp led all players with six first-half rebounds.

Mark Minch and Chad Nelson led Ohio Dominican with 12 points each while Trent Weaver led the Panthers with five rebounds.

NMU returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 9 at Ashland.
