UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. â€ÂÂ" Troy Mattson wonhis first conference game as the head womenâ€Â™s basketball coach at Northern Michigan University on Thursday night at Saginaw Valley State University. The Wildcatsdefeated the Cardinals by a score of 70-46. NMU is now 2-3 overall and 1-1 inthe Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). SVSU falls to 2-5and 1-3 respectively.ÂÂÂ
NMU held a 25-22 lead at the intermission. The â€Â˜Cats shot51.9 percent from the floor in the second half (14-27) to out-score SVSU,45-24. For the game the â€Â˜Cats were 23-55 from the floor for 41.8 percent. AllisonCarroll scored 11 of her game-high 19 points in the second 20 minutes ofaction. She also led all players with 10 rebounds for a double-double.ÂÂÂ
For the game the â€Â˜Cats were 7-23 from the three-point line(30.4 percent) and 17-24 from the free throw line (70.8 percent). SVSU onlymade one three-pointer for the game in 13 attempts (7.7 percent). NMUout-rebounded the home team by 18 boards (48-30).
Maria Kasza was the only other â€Â˜Cat in double-figures with11 points and she added four assists. Jenna Schroeder led the Cardinals with13 points.ÂÂÂ
The â€Â˜Cats will travel to Milwaukee, Wis. on Sunday (Dec. 11)to take on the Panthers of UW-Milwaukee.
