NMU Hockey Hires Chris Kamal as Assistant Coach

Kamal joins the Wildcats after assistant coaching stints with the Seawolves

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- Northern Michigan University hockey head coach Dave Shyiak is proud to announce the hiring of Chris Kamal as assistant coach.

"Accepting this role with Northern Michigan University is truly an honor," adds Kamal, who joins the Wildcats from the University of Alaska Anchorage, where he has been an assistant coach since the fall of 2023. He previously served as an assistant coach with the Seawolves from 2016-18 after serving as the director of hockey operations and strength and conditioning coach in 2015-16. "It is a privilege to join a program with such a strong hockey tradition, and I am excited to work alongside the dedicated staff to continue striving for excellence in Wildcat hockey."

Kamal was a four-year starter in goal for the Seawolves, appearing in 71 games and finishing his career with a 3.03 goals-against average and an .888 save percentage from 2010 to 2014. Kamal's name appears multiple times in the UAA record book, including season shutouts (3, one shy of program record), career goals-against average (4th), and season goals-against average (4th). 

January 11, 2014: Chris Kamal makes on of his 35 saves in a game between UAA and Minnesota State-Mankato. The Seawolves defeated the Mavericks 3-1.

"We are excited to welcome Chris to the Wildcat family," adds Shyiak, who served as head coach of the Seawolves from 2005 to 2013. "Chris has established an outstanding reputation throughout college hockey with his proven track record in goalie development and international recruiting. We are confident he will have an immediate impact on our student-athletes and play a key role in the continued growth and success of our program"

Kamal earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Alaska Anchorage in 2014 and has worked with the Anchorage Wolverines of the NAHL and the Atlanta Fire Hockey Club. 

February 15, 2014: Seawolf senior Chris Kamal is introduced before a game between Alaska-Anchorage and Bowling Green. The Seawolves defeated the Falcons 5-2 on Senior Night.
