Lakosky Continues to Rewrite NMU Lacrosse Record Book in Win over Cardinals

Josie Lakosky sets numerous program records in 22-1 win over Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Josie Lakosky continues to rewrite the NMU lacrosse record book, as a dominant performance guides the Wildcats over the Cardinals.

The junior attacker had a day to remember on the Robbert C. Braddock field on the campus of Saginaw Valley State, adding more accolades to her name as a member of the Wildcats. Lakosky scored a remarkable 10 goals and five assists for 15 points, setting the NMU single-game record for both goals and points. Lakosky eclipsed the 80-goal mark on the season, becoming the first Wildcat to reach 80 goals in a season, and became just the second to reach 30 assists in a campaign.

On top of her remarkable performance today, Lakosky set the NMU single-season record for points, ground balls, draw controls, and caused turnovers, as she was effective all over the field. Lakosky now holds every NMU single-season record, except for the single-season assist record, which she is four away from matching with two regular-season games to go.

Aside from Lakosky, the Wildcat offense spread out its talent all throughout the scoresheet, as 10 other student-athletes scored at least one goal in the 22-1 contest. NMU held a wide margin in shots (38-3), shots on goal (29-1).

A big reason for the 'Cats success on offense came from the success in the draw circle, as NMU won 20 of the 25 draws in today's contest. Lakosky paced the field with an astounding 11, followed by Taylor Roberts with six.

The 'Cats were stellar defensively as well, as the Cardinals turned the ball over 22 times to eight, with NMU causing 13 of those 22 turnovers. Much like the offensive effort, the defensive effort was well spread out, as 12 different 'Cats caused at least one turnover, and 11 different student-athletes scooped ground balls.

Goalkeeper Lauren Esposito started the game, making one save on her only shot against. Hannah Clark took over to start the second half, giving up a free position shot on her only shot faced.

The Wildcats move to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in conference play with one more regular-season GLIAC contest before the conference playoffs; a meeting with the Concordia-St. Paul Golden Bears on Saturday. But before that, NMU travels five hours south to Indianapolis to play the #3/5 UIndy Greyhounds on Tuesday, April 21.

How It Happened
Lakosky opened the scoring for the Wildcats with back-to-back tallies less than a minute apart, with the first coming from in tight on the left and the second with her cutting across the front of the goal, moving from left to right. Lorinser then added back-to-back scores of her own, those coming 31 seconds apart, and the 'Cats held a four-goal cushion with just under eight minutes to go in the first quarter. Jabas made quick work to put NMU up five, and the Cardinals called a timeout. Lakosky completed her hat trick, scoring back-to-back once again, moving from left to right, becoming the first Wildcat to hit the 80-goal plateau in a single season, and giving NMU a seven-goal cushion with two minutes to go in the opening quarter. Jabas made an exceptional pass to find Sisson on the back post, and NMU was up 8-0 to end the first quarter.

Lakosky scored back-to-back once again, breaking the NMU single-season points record and giving NMU a ten-goal cushion and a running clock just three minutes into the second frame. Lakosky earned her seventh and eighth points of the game thanks to a pair of assists, first to a cutting Radke and second to a cutting Grimm. After causing a turnover in the Cardinals' zone, Lakosky took it to the goal and scored her seventh of the game in only the first half, and the 'Cats carried a 13-0 lead into halftime.

The Wildcats made multiple lineup changes coming out of halftime, with starters being shut down and Hannah Clark entering the goal for the second half. Stanton capitalized on a free position attempt while a man up to open the scoring in the second half, then Lakosky made a perfect pass to Weiche as some of the starters found their way back to the field with four minutes to go in the quarter. Ally Schneider got the Cardinals on the board late in the third on a free position shot, and the third quarter came to a close.

Flemming made a great cut, and Lakosky played a perfect pass, and Flemming tacked on her second goal of the season to extend the lead early in the final frame. Lakosky added her eighth goal of the game, followed by Johnson's ninth goal of the season. Lakosky matched the program record and her career best for single-game goals and points, tallying her ninth goal and 13th point of the game off a free position shot with four minutes to go. Lakosky set the program record for single-game points and goals moments later, weaving through traffic to add her 10th goal of the game and 14th point with three minutes to go. Lakosky dumped off a pass to Carrico to score her first of the game as the clock hit a minute remaining, and the Wildcats would win the ensuing draw, and the clock would run down, leading to a 22-1 victory.
