Second Half Fuels #3/5 Greyhounds over Wildcats

Greyhounds outscore the Wildcats 12-1 in the final two quarters of action.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- A second-half surge from the #3/5 University of Indianapolis Greyhounds proved too much for the Wildcats in a rare Tuesday match.

The Wildcats (11-5, 5-2 GLIAC) were in lockstep with the Greyhounds (13-1, 5-0 GLVC) after the opening half, down only a pair of goals at 8-6 through the opening half an hour, and found themselves within reach of one of the top teams in the nation thanks to four goals from Josie Lakosky and eight saves from Lauren Esposito

The 'Cats had an opportunity to cut the deficit to one right away coming out of the halftime break, but were unable to capitalize, and the Greyhounds never looked back; UIndy outscored NMU 12-1 in the final two quarters, including a 6-0 run in the third quarter. A big reason for the Greyhound's success was its dominance on the draws, holding a 19-9 advantage for the match.

Lakosky paced all student-athletes with five goals today, with Avery Lorinser chipping in a pair of goals and an assist. Sophie Langsdale led the defense with three ground balls, one caused turnover, and an assist, and Taylor Roberts led the 'Cats with five of the team's nine draw controls.

For the game, the 'Cats were outshot 50-21, including 29 on target to 14. The Greyhounds scooped 24 ground balls to 17, and caused 16 Wildcat turnovers to seven. The Greyhounds were proficient in clearing, successful on 13 of its 14 attempts while holding NMU to 13 of 22.

How It Happened
Esposito made a save on the opening possession, but a costly Wildcat turnover came back to haunt them immediately, as the Greyhounds capitalized on the mistake to open the scoring a minute and a half into the contest. Lakosky introduced herself to the match, giving the Wildcats its first tally of the evening, but the UIndy offense would capitalize on another man-up opportunity to give the Greyhounds a 4-1 lead halfway through the opening frame. The nation's leader in goals cut the deficit to two at five minutes to go in the first. Esposito made a save, but the ground ball went to a member of the Greyhounds, and Margaret Galloway responded with a goal of her own, just her seventh of the season. The defense stood tall as the period came to a close; Esposito made a save on the game's first free position attempt, Payton Ross caused a turnover on the ensuing UIndy possession, and Avery Lorinser would capitalize on a nifty move from in tight to cut back into the Greyhound lead. Esposito made another crucial save from in tight as the first quarter came to a close.

The Greyhounds scored the opening two tallies in the opening minutes of the second quarter to extend its lead. Lakosky completed her hat-trick with a screamer of a shot from range, the Greyhounds responded shortly after, and Lakosky scored her fourth of the match after receiving a perfect pass from Sophie Langsdale while still on the clear. The 'Cats were able to string a pair of goals together, as Lorinser tacked on her second of the game, and had a prime opportunity to get within one goal with the Greyhounds down two players. Lakosky worked her way in tight and was stopped by the goalkeeper Ava Graham, and the Greyhounds escaped unscathed.

The halftime score was 8-6 in favor of the Greyhounds, with their success coming from the draw circle, controlling 12 of the 15 draws in the opening half hour.

The 'Cats won the draw coming out of half and had a chance to get within one, but the Greyhound defense was stifling, causing a turnover and keeping the 'Cats off the board before capitalizing on a free position shot. UIndy hit the 10-goal mark just shortly after, survived a Wildcat flurry of shots to reach 11, added its 12th tally just 26 seconds later, and the 'Cats found themselves down 6-12 as head coach Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak used a timeout. The Greyhounds added two more tallies to cap off a dominant third quarter, holding a 14-6 advantage into the final frame.

Lakosky scored her fifth goal of the game in the fourth quarter, coming from range once again, responding to a pair of Greyhound goals to open the quarter. Four tallies in the final six and a half minutes would lead the Greyhounds to a 20-7 final.
