Women's Golf Shoots Best Score in Third Round of Saddlebrook Spring Kickoff

WESLEY CHAPEL, Flo. -- The NMU women's golf team saved the best for last, improving once again by shaving 12 strokes off of yesterdays total.

The 'Cats shot a team score of +58, 12 shots better than its second-round +70, and a 22-shot improvement over its opening-round +80. NMU finished with a tournament total of +208 to finish sixth of eight teams. The full live scoreboard can be found at Scoreboard by Clippd.

The course played as a 5,953-yard par-72 for the third day in a row, with the field turning an average scorecard of 87.98, the lowest average of the three rounds. For the week, NMU ranked seventh in par three (3.88), par four (5.48), and par five (6.01) scoring, while finishing sixth in total birdies (10) and pars (80). #4 Marian won the team tournament at +83, ahead of GLIAC foes Davenport (+102) and Saginaw Valley State (+127). 

The Wildcats had its top four golfers finish all within five spots of each other, led by Abbie Pietila, who finished her tournament in T24 at +48 after a third-round +15. For the tournament, Pietila led the Wildcats in par four scoring (5.07), finished T2 on the team in birdies, third on the team in pars, and carded the fewest doubles+ on the squad.

Aavra Relich (+51), Maddy Martens (+54), and Payton Donnelly (+55) all finished one after the other in 27th, 28th, and 29th, respectively. Relich paced the 'Cats in par three average (3.33), total birdies, total pars, and fewest bogeys, Martens led NMU in par five scoring (5.25), while Donnelly was T2 in birdies and fourth in total pars. 

Sara Hasse, who competed as an individual, finished T37 with a three-day total of +85, followed by Gabriella Moreau in 39th at +87, and rounded out by Abby Luke in 42nd at +107 for a three-day total. 

Marian controlled the top-two individual spots, as #20 ranked golfer Keara Eder and #24 Emma Weiler finished at +17 and +18, and #57 Sydney Hugo of Walsh finishing T2 at +18.

This concludes the 'Cats time in Florida, and the team will return to Marquette before a quick turnaround to Lexington, Kentucky, for the SVSU Spring Invitational on March 14 and 15. 

 
Round Two

The Wildcats were one of five teams in the field of eight that saw improvement from round one to two, a day that saw the team card five birdies compared to one yesterday. NMU carded a +70 for a two-day total of +150.

Abbie Pietila paced the team, shooting a +15 and shaving three strokes off her opening round for a two-day total of +33, where she now sits 24th. Pietila carded a birdie on the par-five 18th after carding a double-bogey on that hole yesterday. 

Payton Donnelly and Aavra Relich both shot rounds of +18, giving them two day totals of +37 and +38 to sit in 25th and T26 after two days, respectively. Relich carded two birdies, the par four 2nd and the par three 12th. Donnelly and Relich shaved one and two strokes off their round one scores, respectively.

Maddy Martens shaved four strokes off her round one score with a second-round +19, including birdies on the par-five 7th and par-four eighth. 

Sara Hasse and Gabriella Moreau shot a matching +29, while Abby Luke shot a +39 to round out the Wildcats in the field.

Round One

The four Wildcats who contributed to the team score were all within five strokes of eachother, led by Abbie Pietila at +18. Pietila was the only Wildcat to record a birdie, circling her opening hole, the 465-yard par five 4th, and sits T20 after 18 holes. 

One stroke behind Pietila was Payton Donnelly (+19), and one stroke behind Donnelly was Aavra Relich (+20), who shared a tie for the team lead in total pars with Maddy Martens (+23), who rounded out the team scoring. Donnelly slotted in at T22, Relich in 26th, and Martens T28.

Abby Luke (+31, 36th) and Gabriella Moreau (+33, 38th) both competed as athletes eligible to contribute to team scoring, whole Sara Hasse (+28 T33) competed as an individual.
