NMU Lacrosse Drops 10-11 Heartbreak to UCCS

Wildcats go on 6-2 run to end the game, had a chance to tie it in the dying seconds.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The NMU lacrosse team lost a 10-11 nail-biter to Colorado Springs.

The Wildcats (5-1, 0-0 GLIAC) scored four straight from the end of the first and into the beginning of the second quarter to hold a 4-1 advantage early. The Mountain Lions (1-1, 0-0 RMAC) responded shortly after to spring an 8-0 run that spanned between the second quarter and five minutes into the third quarter.

The Wildcats responded with a run of its own, outscoring USSC 6-2 in the final 25 minutes of the game, including Josie Lakosky scoring to bring the game within one with just under one minute to go. The 'Cats won the following crucial draw and had a shot at goal as time expired, but the attempt went wide, and the 'Cats comeback fell heartbreakingly short.

Annabelle Johnson (3-1--4) and Hannah Jabas (2-2--4) paced the Wildcats in points and goals, followed by Lakosky (1-2--3). Evita Weiche scooped a career-high five ground balls, Lakosky paced the team with three draw controls, and the team forced four turnovers. Lauren Esosito made eight saves for a .421 SV%.

The Mountain Lions held an advantage in shots (30-19), while NMU had an advantage in shots on target (16-13). The Wildcats were only awarded one free position shot while the Mountain Lions were gifted seven. NMU held the advantage in ground balls, 22-19, while the Mountain Lions were in control of the draw circle with an 18-5 margin.

How It Happened
Both teams had brief stints on attack before the Mountain Lions opened the scoring from a free position shot. Carrico hit the post on the Wildcats first shot attempt of the game, but the 'Cats recovered, and Jabas evened up the scoring. The 'Cats then forced a turnover, led by Evita Weiche, which led to Jabas adding her second tally in less than a minute to give NMU the lead. Esposito made a crucial save on a free-position shot to keep the 'Cats in the lead before the Green and Gold stormed down the field to add its third of the game, coming from the stick of Carrico. Esposito made a stop to end the opening frame, and the 'Cats were ahead by a pair heading into the second quarter.

After maintaining possession at the end of the quarter, the 'Cats opened the scoring early in the second frame, as Lorinser finished off a nice pass from Johnson to extend the 'Cats lead. The Mountain Lions stormed back, scoring six-straight to take a 7-4 lead over the 'Cats, holding that into the halftime break.

The Mountain Lions added a pair of free-position goals to open the second half, and Wozney scored her first of the season to end the UCCS run at eight. Lakosky played a pass to Carrico, who struck from in tight while a man up to bring the 'Cats within four before the junior found Johnson, bringing NMU within three as the frame came to a close.

The 'Cats struck quickly into the fourth quarter, as Johnson finished off a feed from Jabas to dwindle the UCCS lead to two. After crucial saves from Esposito and defensive stops, Jabas and Johnson connected to bring NMU within one with just over seven minutes remaining. The Mountain Lions struck shortly after, ending the NMU run at 5-1 and pushing back to a two-point lead, and head coach Majkrzak called a timeout. Lakosky scored to make the game 10-11 with 40 seconds remaining, and Majkrzak once again called a timeout with a crucial draw control impending. Weiche won the draw, and NMU had a chance to tie it, but Stanton's shot careened wide, and the 'Cats comeback fell just short.
