Wildcat Lacrosse Downed by #16/17 Regis Rangers

DENVER -- The NMU lacrosse team finished its Colorado road trip, falling to the #16/17 Regis Rangers 6-14.

The game between the Wildcats (5-2, 0-0 GLIAC) and Rangers (2-2, 0-0 RMAC) was originally scheduled for Friday, but had to be moved up a day due to impending snowfall in the Rocky Mountain area, and the 'Cats played its third game in four days at elevation.

The 'Cats jumped out to an early lead, using five straight draw controls to fuel a 3-1 advantage. Despite holding a 9-1 advantage in draws, Regis would force turnovers, which fueled the Rangers to a 4-0 run to take a 5-3 lead into the quarter break.

With the game at 4-5, NMU got good defense from Natalie Thomas and Krista Pascavis and solid goaltending from Lauren Esposito to go with offensive chances to bring the game back even, but were unable to convert on its chances, and the Rangers would end the half scoring six of the final seven goals in the half, including a buzzerbeater.

A main concern from yesterday's match against UCCS was the draw controls, and NMU responded, out-drawing Regis 17-3 in an exceptional showing in the faceoff circle, but were unable to get any consistent offense. The 'Cats were just about even with Regis on shots for the day, going 26-29 on attempts, but the goaltending of Brigit Goetsch was the highlight for the Rangers, as the reigning RMAC Defensive Player of the Week made 15 saves and posted a remarkable .714 SV%. The 'Cats had 16 turnovers to Regis' eight.

Josie Lakosky led the team with three goals and an assist for four points from 15 shots and 12 on target, matching a career high in shots on goal, and controlled eight draws and two ground balls. Emily Radke, Hannah Grimm, and Hannah Jabas all scored a goal.

How It Happened
The 'Cats got off to a hot start, as it was Lakosky who found the back of the net just 40 seconds into the match to give NMU an early 1-0 lead. 'Cats won its third straight draw control, and Jabas answered the Regis free position tally with a goal of her own, regaining NMU's lead before Lakosky won the ensuing draw and Grimm added a tally to the board. Regis tallied to bring it back to a one-goal game and then won its first draw control, leading to an Esposito save on a free position attempt before the Rangers evened the score moments later. Springman gave Regis its third-straight goal to take its first lead of the day with two minutes left in the opening quarter, and would follow that up by taking advantage of a free position attempt, and the Rangers would hold a 5-3 lead going into the second quarter.

After a good team stops to start the second frame, Radke scooped a ground ball before taking it to the house for a great individual tally and stopping the 4-0 Regis run. Esposito made a crucial free-position save, Pascavis caused a turnover and scooped her own ground ball, Esposito made another save from a free-position shot, and Regis took another two-goal advantage as the 'Cats were unable to convert on three straight offensive chances to tie the game. Regis would score a buzzer-beater with less than a second to go and took a three-goal advantage into half.

Lakosky was left all alone with the goaltender Goetsch to start the third quarter, but the veteran netminder got the best of Lakosky's try, leading to a Ranger free position goal at the other end. Regis won just its second draw control of the game on the ensuing faceoff, leading to Benton scoring man-up to extend the Ranger lead. Regis won its third draw control of the game and immediately went down the field. Benton is completing her hat-trick to take hold of a commanding 10-4 lead, and head coach Lindsey (LeMay) Majkrzak used a timeout. The Wildcats got its first free position shot 40 minutes into the game, and Jabas' shot rang off the post. The Wildcats were able to break through, as Lakosky added the first Wildcat tally in 23 minutes to give NMU its fifth goal of the match.

Regis scored just 16 seconds into the fourth quarter, and the Wildcats would get just its second free position shot all game, but Lakosky was stopped by Goetsch. Lakosky was finally able to break through and complete her hat-trick with 46 seconds remaining.

Up Next
The Wildcats are now off until next weekend, where the 'Cats face another tough road trip with Ashland on March 13 and UIndy on March 15.
