PREVIEW: Alpine Ski to host Regional Championship at Marquette Mountain

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU alpine ski teams have its only home weekend of the season, when the team hosts the USCSA Regional Championships at Marquette Mountain.

Competition will run roughly from 10 a.m. ET to 3 p.m. ET on both Saturday, February 14, and Sunday, February 15. Attendance to Marquette Mountain to cheer on the team is free. Fans unable to make it to the hill can still follow along with live timing, here

After three consecutive trips to Minnesota, the Wildcats will host the beginning of the postseason, where skiers will compete to punch their ticket to the National Championships in Lake Placid at the beginning of March.

This will mark the fifth straight season that Marquette Mountain will host the USCSA Regionals, dating back to 2022. The 'Cats enter the weekend with momentum on their side, as the team has yet to lose this season, and the men and women have won the regional title in every event since 2022.

Skiers are in for warmer temperatures in Marquette this weekend, as the forecast call for temperatures in and around the 40's with sunshine.

Last Time Out
Day One
The teams raced split races today: the men competed in the giant slalom, while the women competed in the slalom. The teams will swap for tomorrow, and the men will ski in the slalom with the women in the giant slalom.

The men claimed first by sweeping the podium with three of student-athletes on the 'A' team: freshman Noah Bindas claimed gold at 48.92 thanks to the first and third-fastest runs, senior Reed Heathman was fourth after the first run before jumping into silver thanks to posting the fastest run two time and a combined time of 49.20, and sophomore Anthony Petkov posted the third and second-fastest run times en route to 49.22 and a bronze medal.

The men combined for 2:27.34 to claim first, outing St. Olaf at 2:36.19 in second and UW-Madison in third at 2:39.40.

For the first time this season, the women's team failed to sweep the podium or win the team event; however, the team got an individual gold medal from senior Kaylee Byrne, who had the fourth-fastest time after run one before posting the fastest time in run two for a combined 1:24.90 and atop the podium.

There were unfortunate spills for the women in run two, as Tommie Springer and Madalyn Stern, who were second and seventh after run one, both DNF in run two. Fellow A teammate Ashley Schaffer DNF in run one, leaving Blanac Srock (1:29.99) as the only other member of the A team to post two runs, where she finished sixth.

Day Two
The men landed five of the top six and eight of the top 13 times en route to winning the slalom event, as Noah Bindas (1:22.09) claimed gold and Kyan Hopke (1:22.32) earned silver. Rounding out the team scoring was Reed Heathman (1:23.52), who finished in fourth place, and was followed by Anthony Petkov (1:23.61) and Eli Heathman (1:24.01) in fifth and sixth. Heathman was the first finishing B-squad member of any team.

The men won with a combined time of 4:07.93, ahead of St Olaf at 4:10.76 and UW-Madison at 4:33.77.

The women were scored based off best run of two instead of combined, and the 'Cats swept the podium and claimed the top seven results, all coming in run two. Tommie Springer (27.23) claimed gold after an unfortunate DNF yesterday, Madalyn Stern (27.53) earned silver, and Kaylee Byrne (27.84) rounded out the podium with bronze. Ashley Schaffer, Onalee Wallis, Maya Bubolz, and Cassidy Whitener rounded out the top seven.

The women won with a combined time of 1:22.60, ahead of St Olaf at 1:26.52 and UW-Madison in third at 1:28.53.
