Women's Alpine Places 16th in Slalom at USCSA Nationals

Tommie Springer and Maddy Stern post results for the 'Cats.

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The women's alpine ski team wrapped up its individual competition at USCSA Nationals, racing in the slalom.

It was a colder but windier day at Whiteface Mountain, and the snow had set up great through the night and into the morning. As a team, the 'Cats placed 16th of 25 teams with a combined score of 7:53.15.

Tommie Springer led the way for the 'Cats, as the junior posted a combined time of 1:47.79 to finish 25th overall among a field of 100-plus. Senior Maddy Stern was the only other Wildcat to score, as she posted a two-run total of 1:57.17 to finish 42nd.

Kaylee Byrne posted a first result time of 55.93 before taking a DNF on her second run. Ashley Schaffer and Blanca Srock both DNF in their first run.

The University of Connecticut claimed the slalom title, followed by Colgate and Rocky Mountain College. Aspen McAuley of Hobart and William Smith Colleges earned the individual championship title

For the week, the women finished 17th of 26, combining both the giant slalom and slalom. Those full results can be found at the USCSA website.

The women's individual championship comes to a close, and now await the combined event on Saturday following the men's slalom tomorrow.

Run One
Schaffer went down third in the opening run, but had to ski off about halfway down the run, ending her day early.

The championship course was proving difficult for the field, as there were numerous DNFs leading up to Springer's run, followed by two immediately after her, as the 43rd down the track. Springer made her way through, crossing the line at 53.27, a result that was 19th at the time,

Stern was the third 'Cat down the hill, wearing bib 63. The senior had a solid run, posting a result one time of 57.49.

Byrne was the penultimate Wildcat in the morning session, wearing bib 94. The senior also posted a solid run one result, posting a score of 55.93.

Srock was skiing steadily at the halfway point before taking a heavy spill at the top of the drop, ending her day on the hill.

Run Two
Springer added a second from her first run, crossing the finish line with a second result of 54.52 to give her a total of 1:47.79.

Byrn had a spill about halfway through the course and was given a DNF before she could get back on and finish, despite not receiving a score.

Stern took to the course shortly after her teammate, where she navigated the drop and touched the line with a second result time of 59.68, giving her a combined time of 1:57.17.

Schaffer and Srock both DNS.
