Women’s Alpine Stumble in Giant Slalom at US Nationals

Three of the five Wildcat racers DNF in opening event of the National Championships.

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The NMU alpine ski team opened its week at the USCSA National Championships with a 19th-place team finish.

The Wildcats were led by Onalee Wallis and Blanca Srock, as Wallis claimed 23rd overall at 2:20.82 and Srock in 26th at 2:23.10.

As a team, the 'Cats posted a combined time of 8:50.06 after Whiteface Mountain caused three DNFs; Kaylee Byrne and Maddy Stern took spills in the first run, while Tommie Springer posted the 10th fastest time in run one before skiing off at the top part of the course.

Julia Wiacek of Babson College was crowned national champion, with Aspen McAuley of Hobart and William Smith Colleges and Synne Gaustad Kvinlog of Rocky Mountain College earning bronze. Rocky Mountain claimed the team title, Babson finished second, and Clarkson claimed third as a team. Full team results and individual results can be found at USCSA.org.

The NMU men's team will now look ahead to its chance at the giant slalom course tomorrow. Fans can follow along with live timing at live-timing.com and watch the live stream for free at the USCSA YouTube page.

Run 1
Springer got off to a great start, as she sped down the course at 1:08.76, the 10th quickest time in the opening qualifying runs and primed for a top-10 finish.

Byrne followed with a good run before losing a ski near the bottom of the course, and Stern followed up with another unfortunate DNF, with hers at the top of the course.

Wallis was the second-to-last NMU racer, where she posted the 25th quickest time at 1:11.80, and Srock crossed the finish line after a slight stumble near the bottom to turn in the 35th quickest run at 1:12.71.

Run 2
The top-30 flipped and raced for a national championship, and Springer was primed to post a solid time. Whiteface Mountain had other plans, as it took five DNFs among the top 11 racers in run two, including Springer.

Wallis (1:09.02) and Srock (1:10.39) cut two seconds off of their run one times to post the 21st and 27th quickest results.

Both Byrne and Stern, who DNF in run one, DNS in run two.
