PREVIEW: Swim and Dive have Senior Day on Saturday

The Wildcats host LSSU for Senior Day and the final home meet before the GLIAC Conference Championships

MARQUETTE, Mich. -- The NMU swim and dive teams will host the annual 'senior day' meet, hosting Lake Superior State University before preparing for the GLIAC Championships.

The Wildcats will honor 18 seniors across both the women's and men's teams: Caitlin Aarseth, Joanne Arbic, Evie DeCarlo, Madison Germain, Pauline Izydorek, Brooklyn Millward, and Anika Wright will be honored from the women's team, and Liam Boomer, Daniel Khmara, William LaCount, Jef Leroux, Hudson Lowery, Leo Nolles, Caleb Rice, Ian Rocheleau, Tobie Stiles, Max Swiatkowski, and Andrew Tease are all graduating on the men's side.

The teams will compete in the PEIF Pool, with the meet starting at 1 p.m. ET. In-person attendance is free; fans can catch both the swimming and diving live streams on FloSports, and follow along with live results in the app Meet Mobile.

Saturday's meet marks the last home event before the Wildcats take on the GLIAC Championships in Holland, Michigan. The conference championships run from February 6-9 in Holland, Michigan.

Both the men's and women's teams slipped slightly in the December edition of the CSCAA Top 25 Dual Meet Rankings, with the men and women falling from 8th and 10th, respectively, to 11th. On the boards, the men slipped from 10th to 11th while the women stayed in its fifth place ranking, in the December edition of the US PDCA NCAA Diving Polls & Power Rankings.

Hear From Heidi Voigt
The Wildcats are coming off a successful weekend at home, with the women winning 185-75 and the men winning 133-128 over UW-Stevens Point. The meet, which was originally scheduled to take place in Wisconsin, had to be shifted to Marquette at the last minute.

Amid the success, the 'Cats saw athletes competing in events they usually wouldn't otherwise. Head coach Heidi Voigt says it was a good meet for her student-athletes to "mix it up a little bit".

"We had to pivot; Stevens Point couldn't host, and we were able to host at our pool, so firstly, a big thanks to the athletic staff for getting that done, and secondly, it was a good weekend. We don't have many meets where [the student-athletes] get to do a few different events and try some different things, so it was good for them to mix it up a litt bit."

Amid the success of the team, standout diver Kalina Ceglinski earned two more first-place finishes to earn her fifth GLIAC Female Diver of the Week honor. The junior ranks first in the nation in the 1-meter and fifth in the country in the 3-meter, according to the US Professional Diving Coaches Association (USPDCA) power rankings.

"She's there putting in work all the time, day in and day out, and her level this year has been really fun to watch. She is really connected to the team and with NMU athletics; she's a member of SAAC and holds a chair on the Make-A-Wish committee. She's put the time in and has done a really good job."

After this weekend, the 'Cats take on the GLIAC Conference Championships. Voigt says that while the season has seemingly flown by, it's important to keep making little adjustments to get better every day.

"We leave for conference [championships] in about two weeks, which I can't get my head around… The work [from the rest of the season] is in, and now this is the week where we keep fine-tuning."

While individual goals set earlier in the season may change throughout the year, some goals remain constant right through to the end of the season.

"You always want to be a GLIAC Champion, and you always want to take Grand Valley off the top of the board. I think we are a really talented team; it's our 18 people versus their 18 people, and we have to go take it to them."
