Bulldog Fall Classic Comes to a Close

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The NMU women's golf team concluded play at the Bulldog Fall Classic, finishing 13th of 13 teams with a two-day total of 680 (+104).

After an opening round of 349, the 'Cats shaved 18 strokes off their score in round two, shooting a 331 (+43). Grand Valley State shot an impressive -3 today, giving them a tournament total of +7 and beating host school Ferris State by twenty strokes.

The Katke Golf Club played slightly longer today, 6,002 yards compared to 5,959 yards yesterday, and remained a par 72. Despite the course playing longer, the field turned in a better score, with the field averaging 81.11 strokes compared to 82.59 yesterday. Similar to yesterday, every hole averaged an above-par score, and only two holes conceded double-digit birdies.

Maddy Martens had the low round of the day for the 'Cats, shooting a 79 (+7) and moving up five spots in the field to finish 44th. After a rocky start that saw Martens shoot +5 in her opening six holes, Martens shot even in her next ten, featuring eight pars and one birdie. Martens recorded a circle on the 470-yard par five seventh. Abbie Pietila had the second-best round of the day and finished second on the team behind Martens after shooting a round two 82 (+10).

Aavra Relich and Payton Donnelly rounded out the team scoring, moving up three and four spots with scores of 84 (+12) and 86 (+14), respectively. Relich carded a birdie on the 350-yard par four 10th, and Donnelly recorded back-to-back birdies on the 470-yard par five third and 350-yard par four fourth. Abby Luke shot a round of 100 (+28).

Gabriella Moreau and Olivia Brill competed as individuals, shooting scores of 91 (+19) and 94 (+22), respectively.

The 'Cats have two more tournaments this fall, starting with a trip to Lemont, Illinois, to compete in the Flyer Fall Intercollegiate at the Cog Hill Golf and Country Club. The tournament runs from Monday, October 6, to Tuesday, October 7.
