Women's Golf Concludes Round One of Bulldog Classic

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The NMU women's golf team concluded round one of the Bulldog Fall Classic, finishing T12 of 13 teams with a score of 349 (+61).

NMU shot an opening round +61, tying Kentucky Wesleyan at the bottom of the field. GLIAC powerhouse's, Grand Valley State (+10) and Ferris State (+12), paced the field comfortably, with the hosts leading Gannon by nine strokes and Davenport by 16. 

The Katke Golf Club, playing as a 5,959-yard par 72 today, averaged a score of 82.59 through 83 rounds scored. No hole averaged over par today, the hardest being the 344-yard par-four eleventh, averaging a whole stroke over par. Only four holes conceded six or more birdies to the field, with only two allowing double-digit birdies.

The duo of Abbie Pietila and Maddy Martens led the Wildcats today, shooting matching scores of of 83 (+11) to sit T49 of 83 after 18 holes of play. Martens led the team in birdies, carding a pair on the 350 yard par-four 14th and 360 yard par-four 16th. These were two of only 12 birdies carded among the field between the two holes, and came amid a stretch of golf where Martens shot -2 in four holes. Pietila carded seven pars, second on the team only to Martens, and scored a birdie on the 478 yard par-five 18th, a hole that averaged nearly a half a stroke above par. 

There is a two-way tie at the top of the individual leaderboard after 18 holes, as Alexandria LeCureux of Gannon and Lea Stotz of Grand Valley State shared a score of 70 (-2), leading Kamryn Shannon of Ferris State by two shots. 

Payton Donnelly and Aavra Relich rounded out the team scoring today, shooting rounds of 90 (+18) and 93 (+21), respectively. Donnelly carded a birdie on the 470 yard par-five 3rd, and Relich birdied her opening hole, the 350-yard par four 10th. Abby Luke was the last member competing for a part of the team scoring, but was outside of Relich by just three strokes with her score of 96 (+24).

Gabriella Moreau and Olivia Brill competed as individuals, shooting matching scores of 94 (+22). Moreau carded a birdie on the 299 par-four 12th, one of only five birdies on that particular hole today.
