Leo Nolles Competing in the World Aquatic Championships

Nolles will represent his home country, Uruguay, and compete in the 50 and 100 freestyle

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Standout member of the NMU swim & dive team and reigning GLIAC Swimmer of the Year, Leo Nolles, is representing his home country of Uruguay in the 2025 World Aquatics Championships held in Singapore. 

Nolles, an All-American who earned bronze medal's in both the 50 and 100 freestyle at this year's DII NCAA Championships, will be competing in both of those events at the World Aquatic Championships.

Nolles began his competition in the 100m freestyle on Tuesday, July 29, with heats beginning at 10:22 p.m. ET (local time - Wednesday, July 30, at 10:22 a.m.). Nolles swam in heat seven of 12, and swimming in lane six, and posted a time of 50.04 to finish second in his heat, compared to his time of 42.71 he swam at the NCAA Championships that earned him a bronze medal. The top 16 advanced to the semifinal races, with the top time in the heats going to 20 year old David Popovici of Romania at 47.41. Nolles finished 42nd of 110, 1.71 seconds out of a qualifying spot. 

Nolles completes his time at the World Aquatics Championships in the 50m freestyle, taking place on Thursday, July 31, with heats beginning at 10:51 pm ET (local time - Friday, August 1, at 10:51 a.m.). Nolles will swim in heat eight of 13, swimming in lane seven. Should Nolles advance from the heats, he will compete in one of the two semifinals on Friday, August 1, and should he advance again, the finals are on Saturday, August 2 (Saturday and Sunday, Singapore local).

Nolles is no stranger to international competition, as he swam in the 100m freestyle in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, as well as swimming in the World Aquatic Championships the past two years.
