Lakers, Panthers on tap for Lacrosse

Wildcats will play the final two road games of the regular season downstate

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU lacrosse team is on the road this weekend, preparing for the final two regular-season road games of the season, coming against No. 22/15 Grand Valley State and Davenport.

The Wildcats (8-5, 2-2 GLIAC) are coming off a weekend split in Minnesota, dropping a crucial conference match to Concordia-St. Paul before securing a Sunday win over Concordia-St. Benedict. The Lakers (9-3, 4-0 GLIAC) come into the weekend leading the conference and winners of four-straight, while the Panthers (6-5, 1-3 GLIAC) enter the weekend just one game back of the 'Cats in the standings.

NMU will play the Lakers on Friday, April 11 at 5 PM from Allendale before making the half an hour drive east to Grand Rapids to play the Panthers at noon on Sunday, April 13. Both games will be streamed on FloLive, and can be found here.

A Look at the Wildcats
The Wildcats are led by sophomore Josie Lakosky, who leads the conference overall in goals (52), goals per game (4.00), free position goals per game (1.31), points (69), points per game (5.31), shots (8.92), and shots on goal per game (6.85). Entering the weekend, Lakosky is eighth nationally in goals, free position goals per game, shots per game, and seventh in shots on goal per game.

As a team, the Wildcats lead the conference in clearing percentage (0.866), draw control percentage (0.614), draw controls per game (15.54), scoring margin (4.69), scoring offense (13.62), and both shots (29.92) and shots on goal (22.69) per game. The 'Cats are the most disciplined team in the conference as well, averaging the fewest turnovers per game (14.00) and the fewest total yellow cards (13).

A reason for the success on the draws is the combination of Lakosky, Katelyn Wozney, Evita Weiche, and Payton Ross, who hold four of the top nine draw controls per game in the conference.

The 'Cats, who are 2-3 on the road this year, are still looking for the first win in program history over the Lakers after the heartbreaking loss to the Lakers earlier in the season, while holding a five game win-streak over the Panthers.

A Look at the Lakers
Grand Valley enters the weekend in the rankings once again, No. 22 in the IWLCA poll and No. 15 in the USA Lacrosse poll.

The Lakers are led by Ashleigh Rothe, who is second in the conference in both points (53) and points per game (4.42), and third in both goals (35) and goals per game (2.92). Looking at just conference stats, in four games played, Rothe leads the GLIAC in assists (8, 2.00/g), points (24, 6.00/g), and both Rothe and Zoe Ziegler lead the conference in goals (16). The Lakers have a pair of upperclassmen goalkeepers who have split time the entire season, and as a team GVSU holds an 8.52 GAA and .500 SV%.

As a team, the Lakers have scored the second-most goals for (149) and has conceded the fewest goals against (101). The Lakers are also second in the conference in caused turnovers (97) and CTO per game (8.08). In conference match ups, the Lakers have scored the most goals (66) and allowed the fewest (27), holding the best scoring margin (9.8) by 6.3.

GVSU, who is 1-2 at home this season, is 17-0 against NMU all-time, most recently escaping Marquette with an overtime win, the first OT game between the sides and second one-goal game versus eachother in program history.

A Look at the Panthers
The Panthers enter the weekend in the win column, snapping a three-game losing skid with a 22-6 win over Saginaw Valley at home. The game against the 'Cats on Sunday will be senior day, and the final game of a four-game home stand for the Panthers.

The Panthers are led by a pair of 25+ goal scorers in Blakely Malpass (28-8--36) and Maddy Haynes (25-2--27), and Theadora Krueger leads the conference in caused turnovers (20, 1.82/game). The Panthers have a pair of freshmen goalkeepers who have shared time in the net this season; as a team, the Panthers hold a 9.08 GAA and .420 SV%.

Overall, the Panthers average the most points per game (17.82) and are second-most in goals per game (12.91) among conference opponents.

Davenport, who are 2-1 at home this season, are winless against the Wildcats in the previous five games, most recently a 9-6 loss in Marquette.
