High Scoring Second Quarter Earns Wildcats Win over CSB

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. - The Northern Michigan women's lacrosse team had a dominant performance against the College of Saint Benedict Bennies, with a high-scoring second quarter paving the way to victory.

Scoring seven goals in the second quarter, the Wildcats were able to hold the lead for the entirety of the match against the Bennies. This was the fifth time this season NMU has scored seven or more goals in a single quarter.

Josie Lakosky and Taylor Priestley both earned hat tricks, as Lakosky earned a double hat trick and Priestley with four, to keep the 'Cats in full swing. Crucial saves from Wildcat netminders and a tight defense led by Dayna Carlson, who for the third time in her career recorded 3+ GBs and 2+ caused turnovers in a single game, allowed for an 11-goal-scoring differential.

Lakosky led the Wildcats in goals, tying her career-best seven, while Priestley made her mark on the match with four of her own, a career-best in single-game goals scored. Camryn Mayer, Sophie Langsdale, Hannah Jabas, and Laine Stanton each added a goal to the scoreboard as well, with Stanton and Mayer additionally each earning two assists.

The Wildcats outshot the Bennies 29-22, putting 23 shots on frame while Saint Benedict only had nine shots on goal. Both teams completed 100% of their clears, but the 'Cats held an advantage in ground balls, 15-14. Northern also had fewer turnovers (6-9), but the Green and Gold caused four of those turnovers compared to the Bennies' only two.

NMU will now look to continue with GLIAC play next weekend as they prepare to head downstate and face GVSU and Davenport.

How It Happened
The Bennies won the first draw control, but Lakosky scored the game's first goal from a free-position shot. The Bennies quickly answered back with a free-position goal of their own, but a quick pass from Stanton to Jabas inside the eight-meter put the 'Cats in the lead 2-1. In the last second of the quarter, Stanton pulled a spin move and ripped one into the back of the net outside of the eight-meter to end the quarter 3-1 'Cats.

Starting the second quarter off strong, Lakosky added her second goal of the game from the right side of the goal inside the eight-meter. Just 30 seconds later, Langsdale put one in to further Northern's lead, 5-1. Coming from behind the net, Priestley fired one in, and two minutes later, Lakosky put in two more goals, earning a hat-trick and making the score 8-1. Keeping the ball rolling, Stanton found Priestley inside to score once again, and Lakosky found her fifth goal of the game to end the second quarter 10-1.

The third quarter started with a save from Wildcat goalkeeper Zoe Montgomery, followed by a quick goal from Lakosky to widen the scoring gap by 10. In the 10th minute, Saint Benedict scored its second goal of the match. A third goal came from the Bennies just a few minutes later, but the Green and Gold kept at them, as Priestley earned her hat-trick as well, receiving a ball from Mayer inside the eight-meter.

A slow start to the fourth quarter led to a Benny goal in the 10th minute, but Priestley took the ball in herself and scored her fourth goal of the game with seven minutes left to keep the 'Cats in a high-scoring lead. To end the game, Lakosky fired one in the top right corner to make the score 15-4.
