Wildcats Fall to No. 22/15 Lakers

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The NMU lacrosse team dropped its first game of the final regular season road trip today, falling to the No. 22/15 Grand Valley State Lakers.

The Wildcats (8-6, 2-3 GLIAC) got goals from Maddi Bast, Taylor Priestley, and a pair from Josie Lakosky. Zoe Montgomery and Lauren Esposito split time today, with Montgomery making four saves from 12 on target and Esposito making six saves from nine on frame. Lakosky led the team with 12 shots, Katelyn Wozney paced the 'Cats with four ground balls, and both Dayna Carlson and Norah Bates caused two turnovers, respectively.

The Lakers (10-3, 5-0 GLIAC) shut out the 'Cats 8-0 in the first half, the first time in six years that the Wildcats were held scoreless in an opening half. Kendra Swope led the Lakers with four goals and an assist, and both the GVSU netminders had exceptional evenings; Kaylyn Carter made seven saves and a clean sheet in the first half, including four free-position saves, and Sarah Krause made nine saves for a .692 SV%.

GVSU held the advantage in shots (25-31), SOG (13-20), and GBs (18-23). NMU posted seven fewer turnovers (10-17) and had double the caused turnovers as GVSU (14-7), marking a season-high in caused turnovers.

The 'Cats regular season road schedule comes to a close on Sunday, April 13, when the team plays Davenport at noon ET.

How It Happened
The 'Cats forced a shot clock violation on the Lakers' opening possession, and netminder Carter had to make a big save from a Lakosky shot before the game's opening goal, coming from the stick of Swope just over three minutes into the game. Swope would add two more, Boose added one of her own, and the Lakers took a 4-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. The last time NMU was held scoreless in an opening quarter was 42 games ago, on 3/24/2023, against Indianapolis.

The second period opened with back-to-back tallies from Rothe, opening the quarter with a goal 35 seconds in. Carlson was denied on a free position attempt, then the Lakers moved down the field and got another goal from Rothe, initiating a timeout from Majkrzak. The Lakers got two more tallies in the final four minutes of play, and the Lakers would hold an 8-0 lead going into halftime, with goalkeeper Carter going 4/4 on free position attempts. This was the first time in six years that the Wildcats were held scoreless in an opening half, the last time being 4/18/2019, a 23-0 loss to Indianapolis.

The third quarter opened with three saves from Esposito on the Lakers' opening possession, and four saves in total before the Lakers found the back of the net just before the 10-minute mark into the quarter. The only other goal in the quarter came from the stick of Bast, scoring with seven seconds left to avoid being shut out for three consecutive quarters, something that has only happened one other time in program history (4/29/2022 vs GVSU).

The 'Cats scored the opening goal in the fourth quarter thanks to Priestley on a free position attempt, scoring a FPG after seven unsuccessful free position attempts. Less than a minute later, the Lakers responded with a tally of their own. Lakosky added a tally of her own with just under seven minutes remaining, the Lakers another of their own with four minutes to go, then Lakosky scored another in the dying seconds of the game to end 4-11.
