Wildcats Fall to Panthers on the Road

Snaps a five-game win streak over the Panthers

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The NMU lacrosse team dropped its final regular-season road game of the year 9-11 to the Davenport Panthers.

The Wildcats (8-7, 2-5 GLIAC ) were led by Josie Lakosky, who scored six goals to lead all field players on the evening. Emily Radke, Katelyn Wozney, and Laine Stanton all scored goals of their own, and Taylor Priestley recorded the lone Wildcat assist. Lauren Esposito got the start today, making five saves from 11 shots, followed by Zoe Montgomery making a pair of saves from seven shots in the second half. Lakosky matched her season-high 14 shots and 11 shots on goal, and the 'Cats 17 turnovers were the third most on the season.

The Panthers (7-6, 2-4 GLIAC) got four goals from Blakely Malpass, her second-most in one game on the season, and got points from seven total athletes. Zoe Cassell made nine saves from 18 shots on target, tying her career-high in single-game saves. Senior Theadora Krueger's five caused turnovers are a season-high and second-most in her career, and the Panthers posted a season-high 21 clears.

Today snapped a five-game win streak over the Panthers, as Davenport held NMU to just three goals in the first half while scoring six, marking the first time since their last win where Davenport held a halftime lead over the 'Cats.

NMU now returns home for the final two regular-season games of the year, spread out between two weekends, and starting with the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley on Thursday, April 17.

How It Happened
The Panthers opened the scoring within the first minute of play, but the next goal in the game didn't come until eight and a half minutes later, when the Panthers doubled the lead. After the third goal from the Panthers, Lakosky opened the Wildcat scoring with just under two minutes to play in the frame. A minute later, Lakosky scored her second of the evening from the same spot from just off the goalkeeper's right post, and NMU was down by one heading into the second.

After back-and-forth play to start the second frame, the Panthers regained its two-goal lead three minutes after the opening draw. Stanton scored from a free-position attempt to keep the 'Cats just down by two. A free position goal from the Panthers in the final minutes, and NMU was down 6-3 heading into the halftime break. This marked the first time since 4/22/2022 that the 'Cats trailed the Panthers going into halftime, which is also the last time NMU lost to the Panthers.

The Wildcats opened the half flying, firing two shots and a goal in the first two minutes of play and on the 'Cats first possession of the second half. The 'Cats followed it up with a handful of clutch defensive stops, but the next goal in the half was similar to the first quarter, as it came around eight minutes later for the Panthers. A flurry of goals in the final three minutes of play saw the Panthers take a 10-5 lead going into the final frame.

It took five minutes of play, but Lakosky opened the quarter with a rare fast-break goal to cut into the Panthers lead. Malpass scored the Panthers 11th tally of the evening with four minutes to go. Priestley made a nice pass to Lakosky from a free position to give NMU its seventh on the evening, Lakosky gave the 'Cats eight two minutes later before scoring the ninth with eight seconds remaining, and this game would end 9-11.
