PREVIEW: Wildcats Set to Host Davenport and No. 17/16 GVSU

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan women's lacrosse team is back at home for two more GLIAC matches, squaring off against the Davenport Panthers and Grand Valley State Lakers.

Last weekend, the Wildcats suffered a loss against No. 9 Indianapolis 3-18 downstate, but bounced back on Sunday with a 20-1 win against GLIAC newcomer Saginaw Valley. Hannah Jabas led NMU's offense in goals, matching her career-high with six against the Cardinals.

Looking to keep the momentum from Sunday's game, the 'Cats are ready to clash against Davenport University on Friday, March 28, at 5 p.m. before battling against reigning GLIAC champions, No. 17/16 GVSU, on Sunday, March 30, at noon.

Attendance at the Superior Dome is free for fans, or you can catch all the action on FloLive.

A Look At The 'Cats
NMU currently has a record of 6-3 overall and 1-0 in conference. Its first conference win was against Saginaw Valley (20-1) this past weekend on Cardinal turf.

Sophomore Josie Lakosky (32-15--47) leads the Green and Gold offense, having won GLIAC Player of the Week twice, along with IWLCA Co-Offensive Player of the Week. Lakosky recently broke and set the NMU single-game points record on two separate occasions.

Freshman Hannah Jabas (20-5--25) and senior Taylor Priestley (15-6--21) follow behind Lakosky in points. Maddi Bast (14-1--15), Sophie Langsdale (10-1--11), and Abby Sisson (8-2--10) have also proved to be key players on the Wildcats' offense. As for the netminders, redshirt freshman Zoe Montgomery has a save percentage of 49.5%, averaging 8.80 goals against per game. Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Esposito has a save percentage of 42.3%, with a goals-against average of 9.24.

A Look At Davenport
The Panthers hold a 5-2 record overall, with the game against the 'Cats on Friday marking their first conference game of the season. Davenport is currently on a five-game winning streak, its last victories being against Thomas More (18-7) and Ashland (11-10).

Senior Blakely Malpass (19-6--25) leads the Panther offense, scoring five of her goals in the last two games. Senior Theadora Krueger (17-6--23) and redshirt senior Maddy Haynes (19-1--20) trail Malpass in points.

Starting freshman goalkeeper Zoe Cassell holds a 37.2 save percentage, averaging 8.72 goals against per game.

The Wildcats are 5-8 overall versus the Panthers, but have won the past four games by a five-point goal differential or more. The 'Cats last victory was a 12-7 win in Panther territory last spring.

A Look At No. 17/16 GVSU
Grand Valley State, ranked 17th in the nation by the IWLCA and 16th by USA Lacrosse, currently holds a 5-3 overall record ahead of the weekend. The Lakers are coming off two losses, against No. 5 Maryville (5-10) and No. 9 UIndy (8-11).

The Laker offense is led by senior Ashleigh Rothe (19-10--29), who scored two goals against UIndy in its last matchup. Following closely behind are redshirt junior Jillian Bingman (11-7--18), and junior Gracie Bancroft (11-3--14), along with senior Zoe Ziegler (10-4--14).

Both goalkeepers have shared the net evenly so far this season. Senior Kaylyn Cater holds a save percentage of 47.9%, averaging 9.25 goals against per game, while junior Sarah Krause has a 51.3% save percentage, averaging 9.68 goals against per game.

Freshman midfielder Kendra Swope received GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors while junior goalkeeper Sarah Krause was selected GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week. Swope scored four goals, adding six groundballs and three caused turnovers, while Krause picked up 13 saves in 60 minutes of action, to surpass 100 saves in her career.

NMU has never won against Grand Valley in the program's history, and is 0-16 dating back to the 2017 season. NMU now looks to change that this weekend.
