#8 Men's Swim Completes Day Two at Calvin Invite

'Cats drop to fourth-place through two days of competition

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --  The #8 men's swim and dive team dropped to fourth place after day two of the Calvin Invite.

The Wildcats (783 pts) now trail #4 GVSU (1442), host Calvin (903.5 pts), and #10 Findlay (863 pts). The full results for the finals can be found here, and the full results from the prelims can be found here.

Through two days of competition, Matteo Ballardin leads the team with 64 cumulative points. Ballardin claimed gold in the 400 IM, bronze as a member of the 800 free relay team, and a member of the ninth-place 200 medley relay team. 

Gabriel Fulconi (45 points) and Timothee Garin (41 points) followed behind Ballardin. Ian Rocheleau (38 points) had another strong day, and after posting the fastest time in qualifyting, Andrew Tease (34 points) claimed gold in the finals to go with a fourth-place finish with a 200 medley relay team. 

The duo of Tobie Stiles and Diego Carrillo finished first and second in the 3-meter six dives, earning 486.20 points and 481.40 points. Travis Thornton finished sixth with 407.05 points, and Ryan Foucault eighth with 314.60.

How It Happened - Finals
The 200 medley relay opened the evening session, hosting three heats and 21 teams. NMU A and B swam in the A finals, with NMU C in the B finals. The A team, consisting of Ian Rocheleau (Back), Andrew Tease (Breast), Leo Nolles (Fly), and Jef Leroux (Free) were the first Wildcat team to touch the wall, coming in at 1:28.69. The NMU B team of Max Swiatkowski, Nick Metzler, Matteo Ballardin, and Youssef Nahali finished ninth at 1:32.94, and the NMU C team of Caleb Rice, Alessandro Rosatelli, Liam Boomer, and Zachary Billotte claimed the 10 spot at 1:33.42. NMU and GVSU were the only two programs with three relay teams in the top-10.

The 100 fly began with the C final that featured Hudson Lowery finishing third in the heat at 51.25. The B final saw Daniel Khmara (49.67), Liam Boomer (50.12), and Ian Rocheleau (50.56) finish one after another before ultimately finishing in the 11, 12, and 13 spots.

The 400 IM featured two heats, with Zachary Billotte representing NMU in the B finals first. Billotte pulled away in the freestyle portion to end it, comfortably winning the B final with a 4:05.95. Matteo Ballardin comfortably paced the field in the A final, posting a convincing 3:51.19 and beating second-place by nearly half a pool length.

Alessandro Rosatelli represented NMU in the C final of the 200 free, and he would win that final with a time of 1:39.89. Gabriel Fulconi, Timothee Garin, and Bazil Massotte swam in the B final, with Fulconi winning the B final at 1:39.31, Garin third at 1:41.36, and Bassotte fifth at 1:41.48.

Nick Metzler opened the Wildcat account in the 100 breast, swimming in the B final, posting a 56.90 to finish third in the heat. After posting the fastest qualifying time in the morning, Andrew Tease represented NMU in the A final. Thanks to a strong push in the final turn, he posted a 54.08 to claim gold in the finals.

B final of the 100 back featured Max Swiatkowski (51.28) and Caleb Rice (51.35), who finished second and third in the B final. Ian Rocheleau swam in the A final, posting a 50.09 to finish sixth in the heat and overall.

 
 

How It Happened - Prelims/Morning Session
The 100 fly opened the morning session, with six heats of 47 swimmers. William LaCount swam in the final heat and was the only Wildcat to qualify for the A final, as he posted the seventh-fastest time at 49.08. Liam Boomer and Ian Rocheleau posted times of 50.12 and 50.42 and will swim in the B finals, and Daniel Khmara and Hudson Lowery will swim in the C finals after posting times of 51.08 and 51.97. 

In the 400 IM, an event with three heats and 17 swimmers, Matteo Ballardin posted the third-fastest time, touching the wall at 4:03.21 to earn a spot in the A final. The only other 'Cat to compete in this event was Zachary Billotte, who just narrowly missed the A final, as he would finish ninth. 

Bazil Massotte, Gabriel Fulconi, and Timothee Garin all finished within .73 seconds of each other, and will represent the 'Cats in the B final of the 200 Free, finishing 14, 15, and 16, respectively. The 200 free saw six heats and 45 swimmers.

Andrew Tease led the way in the 100 breast, finishing first of 25 swimmers with a time of 54.78. Nick Metzler earned a spot in the B finals with his time of 57.60. William LaCount was DQ.

In 4 heats of 30 swimmers, Ian Rocheleau earned a spot in the A final, finishing sixth with his time of 50.06 in the second heat. Max Swiatkowski finished just outside of the A final cutoff at nine, and will be joined in the B final by Caleb Rice, who finished 11th at 51.76.

There were three heats of 17 teams in the 800 free relay during the morning session, with all three of the NMU relays swimming in the final heat. The trio of Findlay A, Grand Valley A, and Northern A blew paced the field, with the NMU A team of Matteo Ballardin, Gabriel Fulconi, Daniel Khmara, and Alessandro Rosatelli finishing third, short by three seconds but ahead of fourth by eleven seconds. The B team of Jef Leroux, Timothee Garin, Zachary Billotte, and Bazil Massotte finished eighth.
