PREVIEW: #8 Men's Swim and Dive at Home for Two Meets

The 'Cats welcome #11 Wayne State to the PEIF Pool for a skins meet on Friday night followed by a session on Saturday morning

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The #8 ranked NMU men's swim and dive team is at home this weekend, welcoming the #11 Wayne State Warriors.

The Wildcats and the Warriors start with a Skins Meet on Friday, November 7, at 5 p.m., followed by a dual meet on Saturday, November 8, at 10 a.m. from the PEIF Pool. For those unfamiliar with the term, a 'skins' event is an exciting series of back-to-back sprint races which operate on a knockout basis, with the two remaining swimmers racing each other in a head-to-head final race. Rounds are fired off at short, set intervals, meaning athletes must not only sprint, but also recover and reset quickly.

Admittance to the PEIF Pool is free for spectators, and streaming coverage will be provided on Flo Sports. The service will be linked once the stream is live and ready to go.

The 'Cats are boasting some top times in the conference through four meets. The Wildcats are currently led by freshman Timothee Garin with Olympian and All-American Leo Nolles in the early going of the season. Garin, a distance swimmer, currently holds the third and fourth-fastest times in the 500 and 1000 free among conference foes, with both of his times already earning D2 B standards in both of those events, and his time of 9:21.12 the 12th-fastest in all of D2. Nolles holds the top time in the 50 fly, and D2 B standards and the 2nd fastest times in the 50 free and 100 fly. Nolles' time of 20.00 in the 50 free is also the second-fastest time in the country, behind only Evan Scotto Divetta of GVSU, and William LaCount's time of 20.38 is third in the conference and 12th in the nation. Nolles' 50 and 100 fly times are both seventh-best in the country.

Fellow freshman Matteo Ballardin is also finding a plethora of success early into his collegiate career, as he holds the second-fastest times in the conference in the 200 free, 200 IM, 200 breast, and 200 fly, while also holding a pair of D2 B standards in the 200 free and 200 IM. Nationally, Ballardin's 200 breast time of 2:01.14 is the sixth-fastest, his 200 IM time is eighth, and his 200 fly time of 1:49.54 is 13th in the nation among D2 swimmers. Jef Leroux has a D2 B standard and eighth-fastest time in the 100 free, and standout diver Tobie Stiles holds the top score in the 1-meter (489.25) and second-best score in the 3-meter (305.94), both of those numbers also first and second in the nation, respectively.

Both the 200 and 400 relay teams hold the second-fastest times in the conference as well, with the 400 relay holding the fifth and the 200 relay holding the eighth fastest marks in the country. The 200 and 400 medley relay teams are in at third and fourth in the conference, respectively.
