Men's Swim and Dive Conclude Opening Weekend with Win

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU men's swim and dive team defended the home pool again, finishing first in the final session of the weekend.

The Wildcats amassed 396 points, followed by the Huskies (308), Panthers (235), and Lakers (98). NMU claimed six of a possible eight first-place finishes and 14 of a possible 24 podium positions, including sweeping the 100 free.

Jef Leroux earned a pair of first-place finishes, first as an individual in the 100 free, then as a member of the 400 free relay team. 

Freshman Timothee Garin opened the meet with an impressive showing in the 500 free, claiming first place and beating the field by 25 seconds. Garin would then go on to help the 400 free relay team to a third-place finish. 

Hudson Lowery claimed an individual first-place thanks to an impressive finish to his race in the 200 fly, moving from fifth to first late in the race. 

The diving team impressed again, as Tobie Stiles found first-place finishes again in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving. Diego Carillo finished third in the 3-meter after finishing just off the podium in the 1-meter. 

How It Happened
The morning started with the 1000 free, and it was Garin clearing the field by a wide margin and touching the wall at 9:31.04, beating second place by 25 seconds. Billotte was the only other Wildcat to race, and he found the podium, finishing third with his time of 9:59.18.

Rocheleau found a second-place finish in the 200 back with his time of 1:52.48, being narrowly edged out by St. Cloud's Matt Pietsch. Caleb Rice was the only other Wildcat to compete in the race, and he finished seventh.

Not only did the Wildcats sweep the podium in the 100 free, but NMU laid claim to the top four spots. Leroux (45.19), Khmara (46.18), and LaCount (46.18) all claimed spots on the podium, and Fulconi (46.72) would claim fourth. Also competing in the race was Massotte (10th).

The 200 breast was a battle of a race in the final heat, as the top three swimmers all finished within less than a second of each other. Metzler claimed the lone podium spot for the Wildcats, finishing third with a time of 2:08.12. Rosatelli claimed fourth, and Tease finished eighth to round out the Wildcats.

Lowery had an impressive race in the second heat of the 200 fly, moving from fifth to first in the final few turns to claim first with his time of 1:58.05. Boomer swam in the first heat, dropping six seconds off his entry time and posting a 1:58.74 to finish second overall. 

The NMU 'A' team of LaCount (46.68), Leroux (44.23), Fulconi (45.12), and Khmara (44.47) posted a time of 3:00.50 in the 400 free, beating second place by seven seconds. The NMU 'B' team of Massotte (47.51), Rosatelli (47.10), Garin (48.15), and Billotte (48.14) rounded out the podium at 3:10.90.

After a first-place finish in the 1-meter diving with a score of 290.35 to start the meet, Stiles claimed first again in the 3-meter to finish, scoring 305.95. After just missing the podium in the 1-meter, Carrillo claimed third in the 3-meter with his score of 254.80. Travis Thornton (1-meter 5th, 3-meter 5th) and Ryan Foucault (1-meter 6th) also competed.
