PREVIEW: Women's Golf at the Flyer Fall Intercollegiate

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women's golf team will head to Lemont, Illinois, to compete in the Flyer Fall Intercollegiate Invitational at Cog Hill Golf and Country Club. The 'Cats travel to Illinois to compete in the two-day tournament, hosted by Lewis, from Monday, October 6th to Tuesday, October 7th. 

The Field has eight teams represented, with strong regional and conference competition. The field includes GLIAC teams Davenport (#75,10), Purdue NW (#125,24), and UW Parkside (#157,36). Top regional teams in the competition include Lewis (#130,26), William Jewell College (#119,22), and Quincy(#124,23). (2024 Rankings).

About the Course: Cog Hill Golf, a Jemsek Golf Facility, is a historic 72-hole public golf facility located near Chicago. Dubsdread (Course #4) has been awarded "America's 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses" by Golf Digest and is rated #1 in Illinois-Golfweek.

Weather Report 
As of writing, the weather in Lemont on Monday calls for partly cloudy weather with 10 mph winds and temperatures in the low 80s. Tuesday calls for temperatures in the low 70s with a 42% chance of rain and winds around 10 mph. While the weather is ideal for golfing on Monday, there's a chance of suboptimal weather conditions persisting throughout Tuesday.

Last Time Out
The NMU women's golf team concluded play at the Bulldog Fall Classic, finishing 13th of 13 teams with a two-day total of 680 (+104).

For the Wildcats, Maddie Martens led the way in 44th with a score of +18. Her strong second round of +7 propelled her into the top 45. Closely behind in 54th was Abbie Pietila, scoring an overall +21. 
In 69th was Payton Donnelly with an overall +32; she scored a +14 in her 2nd round. Right behind her was Freshman Aavra Relich, who finished in 71st with a +33. Independents Gabriella Moreau and Olivia Brill finished in 79th and 81st, respectively. Abby Luke finished in 83rd with a +52. 

Previously at The Flyer Fall Invitational 
The NMU women's golf team faced a competitive field at the Flyer Fall Intercollegiate last season. The Wildcats finished in 8th place out of 10 teams. 

Hailey Bolander led the way for the 'Cats, placing 19th individually with an overall score of +18 after finishing with a +10 in round 2. 
Maddy Martens had the best second performance for the 'Cats with a total score of +16, which netted her 31st place individually. Right behind Martens was Abbie Pietila, finishing in 38th individually
Gabriella Moreau finished 53rd as an individual with an overall of +63. 

Notes on the Field: 
  • Davenport - The Panthers began their season by finishing 6th out of 15 teams at the Ohio Dominican Champions of Women's Golf Tournament. They followed that up with a 4th-place finish out of 13 teams in the Wayne State Warrior Invitational. The following weekend, the team finished 6th out of 13 teams at the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational. Earlier this week, they finished 9th out of 10 teams in the Grand Valley State Gilda's Club Invitational. 
    • Davenport has had a strong start to the season, with Venetia Chap and ThaiLee Gerding finishing in the top 25 in both of the team's first two tournaments. Lauren Gervais was in the top 30 at both the Ohio Dominican and the Warrior Invitational. At the Bulldog Invititational, Gervais finished 17th with a +11, and just behind her was Melissa Walker, finishing in 20th with a +12. Hannah Robinson had her best performance this season, finishing 27th, and Chap finished in 33rd. At the Gilda's Club Invitational, Chap and Gerding again led the way as they finished in 13th (+7) and 23rd (+11), respectively. 
  • Purdue Northwest -  The Pride began their season by finishing 12th out of 15 teams at the Ohio Dominican Champions of Women's Golf Invitational. They followed up that performance with a 13th-place finish out of 13 teams at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Wayne State. Last weekend, they finished 10th out of 13 teams at the Fall Bulldog Classic. 
    • At the Ohio Dominican Invitational, Purdue had three top-50 finishers: Wen-Yi Hung finished in 33rd (+23), Brynlee DeBoard finished in 43rd (+27), and Chia-Hsuan Lee finished in 47th (+28). At the Warrior Invitational, Lee led the way as she finished in 51st (+37). For the Pride, Lee again led them at the Bulldog Classic as she finished in 25 (+14). Just behind her was DeBoard, who finished in 35th at +17. 
  • Parkside - The Rangers opened its season by finishing 9th out of 13 teams at the Wayne State Warrior Invitational. Earlier this week, they finished 10th out of 10 teams at the Grand Valley State Gilda's Club Invitational. At the Warrior Invitational, the Rangers posted a team score of 319 in the first round, breaking the program's 18-hole team record. Over the course of three rounds, Parkside set a new 54-hole team record with a total score of 975, improving the previous mark by 44 strokes.  At the GVSU Gilda's Club Invite, the Rangers set a new program-best 36-hole team score with a total of 655 (+79). The mark shattered the previous record by 27 shots.
    • At the Warrior Invitational, Parkside was led by Lily Zicarelli in 20th (+17), closely followed by Aj Powell in 29th (+21). Powell and Zicarelli again led the way for the Rangers at the Glida's Club Invitational. Powell finished in 26th (+12), and Zicarelli claimed 30th place with a +13. 
  • Lewis - The Flyers opened their season by finishing 8th out of 12 teams at the UIndy Invitational. They then finished 6th out of 13 teams at the Warrior Invitational. Earlier this week, they finished 7th out of 10 teams at the Glida's Club Invitational. 
    • At the UIndy Invitational, the Flyers were led by Kyra Simon and Kendall Farm, who finished in 23rd and 25th overall. The Flyers were once again led by Farm and Simon at the Warrior Invitational, as Farm finished tied for 5th at +4 and Simon finished in 17th at +16. Again, at the Glida's Club Invitational, Farm and Simon paced the Flyers in 8th and 16th, respectively. 
  • William Jewell - The Cardinals began their season by finishing 5th out of seven teams at the KC Cup. Earlier this week, they finished 8th out of 11 teams at the Newmann Fall 25 Invite. 
    • At the KC Cup, William Jewell had three top-20 finishers. Brylie Ellis led the way in 12th with a +13, just behind her were Lily Frazier in 15th (+15) and Kate Cailteux in 18th (+18). Once again, at the Newmann Invite, the Cardinals had 3 top 20 finishers. They were led by Scotlynn Blackington in 13th, who moved up 22 spots in the final round to end with a score of +10. Just behind her were Lily Frazier in 15th (+11) and Kate Cailteux in 19th (+12). 
  • Quincy - The Hawks started their new campaign by finishing 11th out of 12 teams at the UIndy Invitational. At their next tournament, they finished 5th out of seven teams at the Dan Salisbury Memorial Invite in Springfield, Illinois. 
    • At the UIndy Invitational, Quincy was led by Lily Vardaman in 32nd place with a +14. Addison Eades placed in the top 50, finishing 49th with a +28. In the Dan Salisbury, Eades led the way, finishing 11th with a +27. Also in the top 20 for the Hawks were Vardaman in 17th (+34) and Elissa Warren in 19th (+37).
