WASHINGTON, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women's golf team wrapped up competition from the Warrior Invitational, finishing sixth as a team with freshman
Maddy Martens finishing 7th individually.
"My game felt pretty good today," says Martens, making her first career top-10 collegiate finish, moving up nine spots from yesterday. "I was able to get some confidence after a rough start, got in a groove, and started playing the way I know I can."
Starting the day on hole 17, Martens started three-over through her first three holes as she bogeyed 17, 18, and the first hole.
It was then on the par-3 second that she started to turn things around, as she shot two-under her next 12 holes, including three birdies and eight pars.
Maddy dropped two strokes on 14 and 15 before finishing her round with a circle on the card, birdieing the par-4 16th to finish with a 74 (+2), bringing her two-day total to +11 (155).
The 'Cats didn't move either up or down from its T6 position yesterday, but made improvements among the team from day one to two with a +29 total, shaving 15 strokes off yesterday's +44, something head coach
Ben Johnson equated to the team touch around the greens.
"We played smarter around the greens today, saving us a lot of shots in the long run," said Johnson. "There's still a lot of room for improvement, but it was awesome to see strides in the right direction."
The trio of
Abbie Pietila (81, +9),
Maggie Pietila (80, +8), and
Hailey Bolander (82, +10) all turned in solid rounds, shaving off a collective 11 strokes from round one to round two.
Abbie turned in a two-day total of +20 (164) to finish 25th, Maggie's two-day total was +22 (166) to finish 31st, and Bolander carded a two-day total of +23 (167) to finish 34th.
Payton Dube finished 42nd individually and fifth on the 'Cats with her two-day total of +32 (176).
