WASHINGTON, Mich. - The Women's Golf team started their week traveling to Washington, Michigan, to play in a two-day event at the Warrior Invitational, hosted by Wayne State. After the first round, the Cats' landed tied in 6th place out of 9 teams.
The Wildcats turned in a +44 as a team, with the host school Wayne State leading at +20. Saginaw Valley sits 10 strokes back in second place with +30, followed by Davenport in third at +32. Directly ahead of the Wildcats is Purdue Northwest at +39.
"The weather made it a mental grind," says head coach
Ben Johnson, whose team persevered through cooler temps and precipitation. "Everyone is in good spirits for tomorrow, and we are hoping to jump a few spots in the standings."
Maddy Martens was the top finisher for the Wildcats, placing 16th individually at +9 after shooting a round of 81 with a well executed birdie on hole 11. In addition to her lone birdie Martens recorded eight pars, second most on the team.
Abbie Pietila and
Payton Dube both delivered impressive performances, finishing with identical scores of 83 (+11) and tying for second place on the Wildcats and 25th individually. Pietila stood out with three birdies and four pars while Payton contributed with two birdies and six pars.
Hailey Bolander finished her round with an 85 (+13) featuring nine pars, leading the 'Cats in that category.
Maggie Pietila wrapped up her round with a score of 86 (+14), highlighted by one birdie and six pars.
Payton Donnelly is competing as an individual this week, where she sits 49th after day one.
