PARIS - Payton Jacobson of the Northern Michigan Greco-Roman Wrestling team made his Olympic debut on Wednesday morning at 6:39 a.m. eastern (12:39 p.m. Paris time) in the Round of 16, a 10-0 defeat by technical superiority to Serbia's Aleksandr Komarov.
Jacobson, a native of Elkhorn, Wisconsin, took to the mat against a five-time age group World Champion in Komarov. Playing two 3-minute periods with the clock starting at 6 minutes and running down to determine the victor, Jacobson battled neck-and-neck the first minute before Komarov collected four points at 4:58.
Nearing the 4-minute mark, Komarov made it 5-0. Despite a valiant effort from the 21-year-old Jacobson, Komarov ended the match at 3:50 with a sequence of five points for a 10-0 final score.
Komarov was then defeated in the quarterfinals, eliminating Jacobson as only those who lost to finalists are eligible for the repechage round.
