WHEATON, Ill. - The NMU men's golf team wrapped up round one at the Lewis Flyer Spring invite from the Cantigny Golf Club in fourth as a team with an opening round +19.
The 'Cats shot 307 as a team, six shots behind third-place Quincy (+13 - 301), and one shot ahead of the Lewis 'A' team (+20 - 308).
Walter Ylitalo led the way for the Green and Gold, shooting +3 to sit T8 with a front nine 37 and back nine 38 for an 18-hole 75. Walter registered two birdies on the day; his first coming on the 382-yard par four 12th before registering a birdie on the hardest hole on the course in the 553-yard par five 2nd.
Behind Ylitalo was
Russel Sprecher, shooting +4 to sit T15 after round one. Sprecher shot matching nine's of 38 for a total of 76, with his lone birdie coming on the 424-yard par four 1st.
Eric Yun was next, sitting T18 with his +5 77. Yun's lone birdie on the evening came on the 191-yard par three 13th.
Tyler Annala rounded out the scoring for the 'Cats in T25 with his opening round +7 79. Annala found success on the par 5's, as his two birdies came on the 549-yard par five seventh and the 522-yard par five 14th; the fifth and sixth hardest holes on the course, respectively.
Arthur Ylitalo was next at T28, shooting a round of eight-over. It was the tale of two halves for Arthur, as he shot an opening nine +8 (44) before responding with a second-nine 36 (E) that included going -1 in his final eight holes.
Joe Luke competed as an individual, shooting a round of 93 to sit 46th. Luke's lone birdie came on third-hardest hole on the course, the 446-yard par four 6th.
