Daavettila Leads Wildcats at Flyer Spring Invite

CHICAGO -- The NMU men's golf team concluded play from the Flyer Spring Invitational, finishing in 10th place with a 27-hole score of +47.

The tournament was originally scheduled for a full 36-holes, but was cut short on Tuesday due to inclement weather. The teams golfed 27 holes on Monday before the tournament was called for the field. 

Freshman Jacob Daavettila led the way for NMU, finishing T16 on the field with a score of +5. Daavettila opened with an impressive +1 on the opening 18-holes, placing himself T5 after his first round. He opened with two birdies in his first three holes and a birdie on hole eight to turn in a -1 35, followed by two more birdies and a +2 38 on the back. He then shot a +3 39 on his front nine, immediately following, starting with an unfortunate double bogey on the first hole. Daavettila's success came on the par threes, where he led the field with an average score of 2.67 (-2) on five par-threes. In 27 holes, Daavettila carded six birdies, tied for the most among the field.

As a team, the 'Cats averaged 3.37 on the par threes, 4.60 on the par fours, and 5.26 on the par fives. The 'Cats recorded 14 birdies, a number that was fifth-most among the field. NMU recorded 62 pars, 53 bogeys, and 12 doubles+, all of which were last in the field.

Senior Tyler Annala finished second on the team and T37 overall at +8. Annala opened his tournament with a +8 80 in his opening 18 holes before firing an even 36 on the ensuing front nine. Annala recorded birdies on the par-five tenth, par-five third, and par-four seventh, where his -2 and average score of 4.67 on the par-fives were T4 among the field. 

Arthur Ylitalo (+17), Levi Pennala (+18), and Harvey Ylitalo (+18) finished 60th and T61, respectively, to round out the 'Cats in the field. 

NMU now eyes the Upper Iowa Invite at the Sunnyside Country Club in Waterloo, Iowa. The tournament is set to run from Friday, April 3, to Saturday, April 4.
