Ainsley Kirk leads Wildcats in Giant Slalom

LAKE PLACID, New York - The NMU women's alpine ski team wrapped up competition on day one of USCSA Nationals with the giant slalom, led by Ainsley Kirk with a top-10 finish.

The Wildcats raced extremely well, finishing second as a team in day one with a combined race time of 7:15.92, only behind Rocky Mountain College with their combined time of 6:54.27.

The trio of Kirk, Ella Wichert, and Reagan Olli all earned 2nd Team All-American honors for their efforts in the giant slalom.

Warm temperatures and rain in the area caused rough conditions on the course, as 33 of the 130 skiers DNF.

Kirk (1:14.51, 1:10.34 - 2:24.85) sat in 22nd after her first run, but made up huge time and jumped 12 spots thanks to her second run time, the sixth-fastest time of all skiers in the second run.

Wichert (1:14.21, 1:11.18 - 2:25.39) and Reagan Olli (1:13.01, 1:12.67 - 2:25.68) just missed a top-10 position, finishing in 12th and 13th respectively.

Tommie Springer and Emily Creek both DNF: Springer in the second run, and Creek in the first. Springer, who sat two seconds off the podium in seventh after run one, took an unfortunate spill in her second run of the evening, ending her hopes at a podium.
