MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan women's lacrosse team displayed dominant defense and offense on Sunday afternoon in a 17-4 rout of Quincy. The win moves the 'Cats to 3-0 on the young season.
The effort was led by seniors and freshman for the Green and Gold. Seniors
Minnie Bittell (5g, 4a) and
Kaitlyn Bridger (3g, 1a) were great once again while freshmen
Josie Lakosky (3g, 3a) and
Abby Sisson each scored hat tricks as well.
Freshman goalkeeper
Lauren Esposito was stellar in net, making nine saves in the game for a 69.2 save percentage. It marked the fewest goals the 'Cats allowed in nine games dating back to last season.
How it Happened
Bittell grabbed the opening draw to then start the scoring with a drive through the eight meter. Bridger had back-to-back goals to pull ahead of the Hawks. With a feed from Lakosky, sophomore
Laine Stanton faked out the goalkeeper with a highlight reel behind-the-back goal to end the quarter 7-2 in favor of NMU.
Nearly six minutes into the second quarter, sophomore Wildcat
Danielle Key scored her first of the season. Bittell had three more goals to close out the half with a nine goal lead. Esposito made six saves in the half.
With a clean pass from Bittell, Lakosky scored her second and third goals of the game in the beginning 10 minutes of the second half. The 'Cats opened up a running clock early on in half two and held the Hawks to just a single goal in the second half while scoring five goals to end the game 17-4.
