Wildcats Fall to No. 11 Maryville Saints

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan women's lacrosse team hosted the nationally ranked Maryville Saints in a 10-25 defeat.

The Wildcats' point leaders were senior Minnie Bittell (3g, 0a)  and freshman Josie Lakosky (2g, 1a) with three points each. Senior Kaitlyn Bridger (2g, 0a) and sophomore Laine Stanton (2g, 0a) trailed closely behind with two points each. Freshman goalkeeper Lauren Esposito had 11 saves on the night.

The USA Lacrosse Magazine Division II Preseason Player of the Year Sydney Tiemann recorded nine goals and one assist for the Saints.

How it Happened
The Saints scored the first goal of the game in the first three minutes, but the 'Cats were quick to answer back with a shot low past the goalkeeper from sophomore Laine Stanton. Despite Esposito making several crucial saves, the Saints were able to put up six more goals unanswered.

Freshman Josie Lakosky broke the silence by out-running her defender towards the net for a top-shelf goal. NMU had goals from Bridger, Bittell, and Stanton before closing out the quarter with a two-goal deficit.

NMU was scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the second quarter while Maryville put up seven goals. Bridger sank a shot in the back of the net with a pass from Lakosky for the lone goal of the quarter.

Lakosky scored the second half's first goal for the 'Cats to build much-needed momentum for the team. Shortly after her goal, Lakosky fed a pass to Bittell for back-to-back goals for NMU. The Wildcats held the Saints to just three goals in the third quarter.

Sophomore Dani Key snuck one past the Saints goalkeeper with a low shot. The 'Cats had chances all unsuccessful for a final score of 10-25.
