DEARBORN, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University men's golf team finished six out of nine teams at the Motor City Shakedown, led by two top-10 finishes from
Arthur Ylitalo and
Eric Yun.
After putting himself in a good position through 18 holes
yesterday,
Arthur Ylitalo finished in the top three with his round of 74 (+2), giving him a two-day total of 143 (-1). This marks Ylitalo's best 18-hole score of his career and matches Austin Elsner's round of 143 at sixth in the NMU record book for individual 36-hole scores.
"I missed a few chances and had a couple of bad shots, but I scrambled well today and grinded to stay under par for the tournament," said Arthur, who carded five birdies in his second round, four of which came on the back-nine. Ylitalo's 11 birdies in two rounds are also second for most individual birdies through 36 holes in NMU history.
After his third-place finish, Arthur was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Eric Yun was next, turning in his fifth career top-10 finish at 7th individually with his two-day total of 145 (+1), including nine birdies.
Walter Ylitalo and
Joe Luke rounded out the scoring for the Wildcats, as they turned in two-day scores of 151 (+7) and 158 (+14), each turning in two birdies of their own.
The 'Cats moved down four spots from yesterday's finish, adding 14 strokes to their total with a round of 304.
"This is a challenging golf course, which makes it difficult to put two good days together, and I'm happy to see a couple of our guys play well both days," said head coach
Ben Johnson. "Next step is to get everyone rolling for two days, and we can compete with anyone."
Tyler Annala and
Russel Sprecher rounded out the 'Cats in 48th and 53rd with scores of +16 (160) and +26 (170), respectively.
