DEARBORN, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University men's golf team kicked off play at the Motor City Shakedown, sitting second place out of nine teams after an outstanding opening round of +2 (290).
Their score of 290 marks the best team 18-hole performance since April 11, 2023, highlighted by a record-breaking 21 team birdies, breaking the previous record of 18.
Arthur Ylitalo shared the Wildcat lead as he celebrated a personal milestone with his first collegiate sub-70 career round, translating to an impressive three under par. This round not only marked his best collegiate performance of his career, but also placed him tied for second overall as an individual heading into round two. Arthur's six birdies highlighted his ability to seize scoring opportunities and maintain composure under pressure.
"I was sticking the ball the best I have in a while," said Arthur. "I hit a lot of greens and gave myself a lot of looks for birdie."
Eric Yun also delivered an exceptional performance, matching Ylitalo with a round of 69 and tying for second place individually. Yun recorded four consecutive birdies out of his total of six during his round. This streak not only shows his momentum but also demonstrates his focus and confidence as he navigated the course.
"I played aggressively to my spot," said Yun, "and that put me in position to hit my putts."
Walter Ylitalo contributed solidly to the team with a round of 75 (+3), tying for 16th place individually with three birdies.
Tyler Annala shot 77 (+5), securing six birdies and ended T29 to round out the Wildcat scorers.
Joe Luke carded an 80 (+8) with two birdies, placing him tied for 44th individually, followed by
Russel Sprecher who scored 86 (+14), recording one birdie and finished T52 individually.
Arthur, Yun, and Annala each contributed six birdies individually, each of them tying for third place in most single-round birdies, just one stroke shy of the individual record.
After an impressive start to the tournament, the Wildcats are set to make a strong push as they head to the next round.
