Men's Golf Conclude Marathon Outing as Round Two is Delayed

The Wildcats completed all of round one and a majority of round two before a delay for darkness

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The NMU men's golf team opened its season with a marathon, playing nearly two full rounds in a day that started at 9 a.m. and ended at 8:30 p.m.

The Bulldog Fall Classic (or Midwest/Central Regional Preview) kicked off today, with two rounds of golf scheduled for today before the third round would be played tomorrow. The field completed round one around 4 p.m. today before immediately starting round two. The field fell just short of completing the full two rounds before the daylight disappeared, with teams finishing 15 to 16 holes of the second round after a nearly 12 hour day on the course in heat and humidity.

Through roughly 34 holes of play, the 'Cats sit in 17th, shooting a combined score of +61. Ahead of the 'Cats were Lewis (+52) and Northwood B (+48). Rockhurst (+3) held a massive lead over the rest of the field, with Ashland and Gannon the next closest in a tie for second at +14.

Round two will be finished tomorrow morning at 9 a.m., with the team playing their remaining 2-5 holes before the final round begins immediately after. The full results from today, along with live scoring tomorrow, can be found here.

Leading the 'Cats was Junior Arthur Ylitalo, shooting +8 thru 34 holes of play. Arthur began his day on hole 12, rattling off six straight pars before doubling the 18th to start a stretch that saw him shoot +4 in six holes. He would end his round shooting -1 with two birdies in his final six holes, carrying momentum into the start of the second round. Arthur started with two bogies in his opening three holes before again firing six-straight pars, but would ultimately bogey three of his final seven holes to finish at +8 with two holes left to play before round three. Arthur recorded 23 pars, a tie for fifth among the field and two back of the lead (Peter Roehl of Ferris State had 25 pars).

Behind Arthur was younger brother and freshman, Harvey Ylitalo, who competed as an individual to shoot +13 thru 31 holes of play. Harvey had an up and down start to the day, with a bogey on the first immediately followed by a birdie, followed by three bogies and a birdie to finish the final four holes of the back nine. Harvey shot a 37 on the front and 39 on the back for a +5 in round one. Round two saw four bogeys and a double in his opening five holes before a stretch of six pars in eight holes to finish the day before the delay.

Tyler Annala (+16) and Jacob Daavettila (+17) finished second and third in team scoring, with Daavettila needing two holes and Annala needing three to finish their respective second rounds. Finishing team scoring was Levi Pennala (+20), who will finish his second round with two holes remaining. Brady Badker competed as an individual, shooting a +25 through 33 holes.

Round two wraps up at 9 a.m. ET tomorrow morning from the Katke Golf Club in Big Rapids, Michigan.
