Alpine Dominate Slalom on Day Two of USCSA Giants Ridge

Grzelak and Olli claim gold, ‘Cats control the top 10

GIANTS RIDGE, Minn. - The NMU Alpine Ski Team wrapped up competition from Giants Ridge with the Slalom, claiming two more gold medals and plenty of top finishes.

Aaron Grzelak claimed gold in the men's category, followed by Reed Heathman finding the podium with a bronze medal. Four more 'Cats found the top 10, as the men's team claimed six of the top 10 spots. 

The women swept the podium, led by Reagan Olli and followed by Ella Wichert and Tommie Springer. Four more 'Cats were sprinkled in the top 10, as seven Wildcats occupied the top 10.

Men's Runs
After posting the fastest time of the day in his first run, Aaron Grzelak (37.62, 41.46 - 1:19.08) then posted the fastest Wildcat time in the second run to secure a gold medal.

Reed Heathman (38.94, 42.02 - 1:20.96) was fifth after his first run, then moved up two spots with his second run time to claim a bronze.

After finishing atop the podium on Saturday, Brad Seaborg (38.55, 42.47 - 1:21.02) finished just outside a podium spot in fourth place.

Will Blackmer (39.51, 43.47 - 1:22.98) was next at sixth, Connor Abraham (40.43, 42.80 - 1:23.23) finished eighth, and Nathan Dehart (41.32, 43.21 - 1:24.53) rounded out the 'Cats in the top 10 at ninth. 

Mitchell Forsberg placed 13th, Colin Dehart finished 16th, and Andrew Truman DNF after he posted the second fastest run of the day with 38.35.

Women's Runs
After just missing the podium in yesterday's giant slalom, reigning slalom national champion Reagan Olli (44.43, 41.84 - 1:26.27)  picked up right where she left off and claimed gold in the slalom. Her second run was the fastest of any female skier on the evening.

Ella Wichert (45.57, 41.97 - 1:27.54) followed up her bronze yesterday with silver today, and Tommie Springer (46.25, 43.16 - 1:29.41) rounded out the podium after her gold yesterday.

Kaylee Byrne (47.84, 42.38 - 1:30.22) finished just outside the podium at fourth, Emily Creek (47.28, 43.89 - 1:31.17)  and Madalyn Stern (47.98, 43.32 - 1:31.30)  placed sixth and seventh, and Cassidy Whitener (48.76, 44.20 - 1:32.96) rounded out the top 10 in 10th.

Erin Hoelzel finished 14th, Georgette Sake finished 17th, Julia Greene placed 19th, Jacey Johnson placed 25th, and Maya Bubolz rounded out the 'Cats in 30th.

The 'Cats travel back to Minnesota next weekend, where they compete at Spirit Mountain in USCSA Spirit Mountain from January 27-28.
