Lacrosse Suffers First Loss of Season Against No. 20 Maryville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The NMU lacrosse team was back on the road this week for its third of four consecutive road games. NMU matched up with the No. 20 Maryville Saints, resulting in the 'Cats first loss of the season, 21-11.

The top scorer of the game was Katelyn Mongold with six, a career-high mark. Kaitlyn Bridger and Minnie Bittell each added had two. Sydney Tiemann added six goals for Maryville to improve their record to 5-0. NMU fell to 4-1 with the defeat.

How it Happened
The Wildcats took the lead in the first minute with a strike from Kaitlyn Bridger. This was soon followed by the Saints matching that point. Our opponents put another point on the scoreboard before Mongold earned a goal, putting the score at another tie. With one more point made by each team, another from Mongold, the game entered the second quarter with a tie of three points.

Kicking off the quarter was Mongold with a point, which finalized her hat trick of the game. Two goals made by Maryville had Northern Michigan racing to try and take the lead. Bridger found her second strike of the game and tied up the score for a short time. After the Saints netted yet another one, Natalie McGinnis followed up with her first goal of the game. With the game knotted for the sixth time, Maryville put it into high gear and ended the first half with a two-point lead on the Wildcats, 8-6.

A goal from Minnie Bittell was one of two that were made by the Wildcats in the third quarter. Maryville, on the other hand, was able to score eight, with three of those points coming from Helen Bae. In the final four minutes, Mongold was able to add another point for the Wildcats, but the deficit grew to eight at 16-8.

In the final 15 minutes, Mongold found two more goals for the team, putting her at a career-high of six goals. Bittell netted her second of the afternoon with ten minutes to spare. The Saints scored in the closing seconds to push the gap to ten and finish the game in running time.
