NORTH CANTON, Ohio – The NMU lacrosse team began its seven game road series on Wednesday with a 13-10 loss against Walsh University.
Madi Bast led the Wildcats in goals with four and Melinda Maers of the Cavaliers matched it. Bast also led with seven shots on the goal while Johnson followed behind with three.
How it Happened
Despite the game starting with a draw control by the Cavaliers, the Wildcats had
Kaitlyn Bridger striking first. Walsh's first goal of the game countered Northern's lead, which was then reinforced by three more goals that were snuck past
Hannah Melander. In the final ten seconds of the quarter,
Minnie Bittell netted the Wildcats second goal. The quarter ended with a score of 4-2 Cavaliers.
A goal by Walsh kicked off the second quarter, but
Danielle Key took a free-position shot for the 'Cats and earned another tally. After two goals were made by Melinda Maers for the Cavaliers, Madi Bast struck twice for Northern. The teams headed into halftime with Walsh leading 7-5.
Clara Johnson earned her fourth goal of the season with the point made at the beginning of the third. With Walsh's two nettings following Johnson's, Key answered, which had the Wildcats trailing by two. The Cavaliers sent it into overdrive, adding two more points to the scoreboard and ending the quarter with a lead of 11-7.
A small back-and-forth game was played in the final 15 minutes, with the first coming from Bast. Her point was reciprocated less than a minute later, with Walsh maintaining a lead of four. Johnson scored for the second time that evening while Walsh followed once again. Bast ended the cat-and-mouse game with her fourth netting of the day, putting her at 22 overall this season. With a lead of three points, the Cavaliers took the win with a score of 13-10.
