Women's Golf Adds Two D1 Brighton Recruits

Both Martens and Pietila were All-State First Team selections in high school

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The NMU Women's Golf program has signed two top MHSAA DI recruits; Madison Martens and Abbie Pietila.

Head coach Eric Johnson had this to say following the two signings:

"I'm thankful for the Brighton Golf program and coaches Paul Parsell and Ted Kuhns. We are very excited to welcome both of these girls to the program. They will, no doubt, help us accomplish our goals and greatly enhance our program. A big Wildcat-welcome to Abbie and Maddy. "

Madison Martens
Martens hails from #1 ranked Brighton High School where she was named All-State First Team by the MIGCA. Brighton took home their 2023 conference and regional championships and finished second at the DI MHSAA state finals losing by one shot. 

Martens had a T1 finish at the conference championship, finished 6th at the MHSAA regional and 12th in the State finals. She finished her senior fall season with a solid 78.0 scoring average.  Martens, who started playing golf as a freshman in high school, is a two-time MHSAA DI All-State selection and has picked up the competitive game quickly. 

Head coach Eric Johnson had this to say about his new recruit:

"We are very excited to welcome Maddy to the program. She will bring steadiness and a great competitiveness to the team. She's a standout in the classroom as well and has proven she belongs with the best on the course." 

Abbie Pietila
The NMU Women's Golf program signed its second top MHSAA DI recruit in as many weeks; Abbie Pietila. Teammate Maddy Martens signed initially, both of whom led  
 #1 ranked Brighton High School to the 2023 conference and regional championships and finished second at the DI MHSAA state finals. Individually, Pietila finished T1 at the conference championship, 2nd at the regional championship and T8 at the state finals. Pietila, along with Martens, was selected All-State First Team by the MIGCA.

Pietila is no stranger to NMU and college golf. Two of her older sisters have been on the Wildcat golf roster. Annie Pietila, who finished her career in the Spring of 2023 was a three-year letter winner and three-time All-GLIAC golfer with the Cats. Her older sister Maggie is currently on the Cat's roster. Her two oldest sisters, Emmie and Hannah, played golf at the University of Tennessee. 

"Abbie comes to us from a great family and a long line of college athletes." She's the youngest of eight children and has been a standout highschool golfer in Michigan. She has a great head on her shoulders and brings a strong talent and desire to win."
