Northern Michigan Falters to No. 13 MTU on Saturday

MARQUETTE, Mich. -  The Northern Michigan hockey team (12-14-0, 8-10-0) fell to No. 13 Michigan Tech (18-7-4, 11-5-4) on Saturday at the Berry Events Center by a 4-1 score, as the Huskies earned the sweep. MTU scored in each period including two goals in the middle frame for separation.

The Wildcats came out of the gates looking strong, creating several quality chances at the net in the opening minutes from the top two lines. After the Huskies started to gain momentum following a power play albeit an unsuccessful one, they were able to get on the board first with 5:52 remaining in the opening period. Logan Pietila scored for the third time against the Wildcats this season, collecting a rebound in front and beating Beni Halasz five-hole.

Just 2:40 into the second period the 'Cats go the equalizer. Joey Larson was open in front of the net and Artem Shlaine and Kristof Papp created an opportunity to find Larson and he found the back of the net to get Northern on the board.

The rest of the period belonged to the Huskies, however, as Arvid Caderoth gave MTU the lead back just over five minutes later and Parker Saretsky got another with less than two minutes to go as Michigan Tech carried a two-goal cushion into the final frame.

Northern Michigan gave themselves some chances to get back in it, but MTU's goalie Blake Pietila came up with timely saves to prevent any hope for the home squad. Ryland Mosley put the finishing touches on an MTU victory with an empty-net tally in the final seconds.
